Student Ambassador Activities

Admissions/Recruitment assistance

  • Student panels: In-person and virtual presentations
  • Assist admission counselors with regional events
    • This could include presentations, one-on-one meetings with students and families, application events or send-off parties.
  • Provide the NMU student perspective when asked (ie. Admissions counselor is working with a prospective student who wants to know more about your major, or what it’s like to live in the dorms, etc.
    • Email or Zoom appointment
  • Student volunteer at Admissions events: Wildcat Weekend & Presidential Scholars
    • Student panels, walking visitors around campus, helping with event logistics
  • Chat with a current NMU student: Live Chat
    • Sign up for a two-hour shift when it's convenient for you to man our live chat feature on our website. You will answer questions from the current student perspective via live chat. 
    • Can be done on your laptop while you do homework or on your phone.

Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year close on January 31, 2023 @ 5:00 p.m.

Student ambassadors will be selected by a team of staff from NMU's Admissions and University Marketing and Communications (UMC) departments at the beginning of the academic year during the fall semester and be involved in the program until the end of winter semester. Participation is not required during the summer, but would love volunteers.

Students will be selected based on the following criteria:

  1. Embodiment – should be a personified example of the NMU brand and core values.
  2. Authenticity – should be able to interact both in person and via social channels with a level of realism that other students will be able to relate to.
  3. Academic merit –  must be in good academic standing and have the ability to speak on behalf of the university in a professional manner.
  4. Established – must have a solid understanding of the social media landscape and a good reputation on their own personal accounts. Must also have established self in NMU community by involvement in at least one extracurricular activity on campus. 

 

Requirements for Involvement: 

  1. Participation in one or two ambassador activities a month from either admissions recruitment/digital marketing/ or social media activities. Ambassadors will be able to pick and choose what they want to do from a list of approved activities. 
  2. Ambassadors must participate in Wildcat Weekend every October and March. 
  3. Participate in one panel every academic year (Saturday visit, Wildcat Weekend, virtual, etc.)

Unacceptable behavior: 

  1. Adverse or derogatory statements towards NMU and the brand itself.
  2. Discrimination regardless of whether the post is relative to the NMU brand or not (this includes age, sex, race, color, creed, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, disability and/or marital status).
  3. Disclosing confidential information.
  4. Acting as an official spokesperson for the university in the event of a crisis.

Personal conduct:

Student Ambassadors will be considered a university representative and must be aware that they may be subject to scrutiny by media members or members of the public. Students selected for the position will agree to not do or commit any act that might tend (in NMU’s judgment) to reflect unfavorably of the university.

If a student at any time fails to uphold these standards of personal conduct, their position as a Student Ambassador will be terminated, without the option to re-apply.

Selection and Onboarding timeline for Student Ambassadors will be as follows: 

  • Applications Due: Tuesday, January 31st  by 5:00 p.m.
  • Interview selection/invitations go out: Friday, February 3rd
  • Interviews: Will be held in the form of virtual mock student panels (PICK ONE). 
    • Tuesday, February 7th 
      • 3:00pm-3:45pm 
      • 4:00pm-4:45pm 
    • Wednesday, February 8th
      • 3:00pm-3:45pm
      • 4:00pm-4:45pm 
  • Virtual Onboarding (Zoom): Wednesday, February 15th from 4:00pm-5:00pm. 
  • Mandatory Wildcat Weekend Training: 
    • Friday, March 17th (select from one) 
      • 10-10:45 a.m. or 
      • 2-2:45 p.m.
    • Saturday, March 18th 
      • 6:50 a.m. 

Student Ambassadors are required to provide full disclosure of their position as an ambassador of the university. In order to do so, this includes providing an explanation of the relationship with NMU and using the hashtag #NMUStudentAmbassador in relevant posts. It is also encouraged that student ambassadors mention their title in the bio section on their social media accounts.

Any content provided by our student ambassadors is subject to the use of the university on any marketing-related collateral.
