Transfer Student Checklist

So, you're considering transferring to Northern Michigan University?  Great!  Below you will find a look at what's ahead in the transfer process for most students.

Application Process
Apply online or download a printed application (recommended to be completed 2-3 semesters before intended transfer).
Pay the $35 application fee.
Arrange to have official transcripts mailed to NMU (when first applying and then when finished at your current or previous college). Official transcripts need to mailed or submitted in a sealed envelope from your previous institution (e-transcripts are accepted via most electronic services).
Schedule a campus visit (optional, but highly recommended) at www.nmu.edu/visit or by calling 906-227-2650.
Contact your transfer admissions counselor if you have questions about of the steps or need guidance.
   
Housing
Set aside $125 for the housing deposit, which is submitted along with your housing application
Learn about the housing policy requirement and who is eligible for which locations.
  • On-campus housing options: Residence halls, on-campus apartments, upper-classman residence hall (Spooner)
  • Off-campus housing resources are at the Dean of Students website.

Tuition and costs, scholarships

Make sure NMU is selected to receive your FAFSA (priority deadline of Mar. 1 for fall semesters and Oct. 1 for winter semesters).  Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov for details.*

  * If the number of credits you will transfer exceeds the number of credits required to earn your NMU degree, please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss any potential impact on your scholarship and/or financial aid eligibility.
 

Once Admitted

You will receive a transfer credit evaluation (TCE) within 2-3 weeks by mail.
Activate your MyNMU
Register for orientation (required for all students new to NMU). $75 fee.
Setup your on-campus living arrangements or explore your off-campus housing options, if applicable.
Parking permit: $140/year for one car on campus.
Recreational facilities pass: $70/semester or $130/year (optional).
Start saving up for books! Amount depends on course load and class requirements. You can charge textbooks to your NMU account through the NMU Bookstore.  You can also reserve your textbooks and have them all ready for pickup when you arrive.
Course registration will occur during the orientation session (for in-person sessions), or at a specified date for online orientation.
Marquette Living
Become familiar with your future home in Marquette.
