Counselor Visit Weekend at NMU

Counselor Visit Weekend at Northern Michigan University is planned especially for high school counselors (who work with juniors and/or seniors) and community college counselors. This event takes place on NMU's campus on the shoreline of Lake Superior in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. A visit to our campus during the winter is guaranteed to show you why they call Michigan a winter wonderland.

Students on a break from class

Our next visit weekend is scheduled for January 29-31, 2015 so please mark your calendars! Then check back in Fall 2014 for a tentative schedule of events and registration details.

The 2013 weekend activities included:

  • round trip transportation-via luxury coaches for counselors from Lower Michigan, Illinois/Wisconsin and Minnesota
  • lodging for two nights
  • all scheduled meals while on campus
  • several social activities including:
  • meetings with faculty and staff members from a variety of areas
  • most importantly, you will have the opportunity to meet and talk with current NMU students

Since 2000, NMU has hosted over 200 high school and community college counselors from throughout Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan.  Here’s what some of them had to say about their experience:

“Everything that we experienced helped with the ‘big picture’ and smaller details of what NMU has to offer to students.”

“I felt totally pampered the entire weekend!  The lodging, meals, NMU staff and faculty, tours, hockey game, etc., all gave me a great feel for NMU and the programs offered there.”

“I feel like I can now highly recommend NMU with first-hand knowledge...”

“I would recommend this event for any high school or community college counselor... I had read in ‘Rugg’s Recommendations on the Colleges’ that NMU students reported ‘simply being happy being at NMU’.  That’s the feeling I came away with too...”

“After this experience, I can say with certainty Northern Michigan University would be a place that I am sure many students would be happy to call ‘home’”.

“It was first class all the way (even the blizzard!).”

“I would recommend that any counselor or advisor take advantage of this visit.  The information was helpful and I was in awe of the facilities and programs that you offer.  The information I learned will be very helpful when I meet with students.  If my kids were at that age of going to college, I would recommend NMU in a heartbeat.”
