Equipment Rental

The NMU Recreational Sports department can help you explore the natural environment of Marquette and the Upper Peninsula with equipment from the Outdoor Recreation Center. Rental items available include camping, boating, and snow equipment, such as sleeping bags, snowshoes, cross country skis, stand up paddleboards, and kayaks (see full list below). The rental center is located near the PEIF (Physical Education and Instructional Facility) Climbing Wall in Northern Michigan University's Sports Complex.

Bike rentals are available on first come first serve basis at the PEIF ORC and Fit Zone. Bikes are for NMU Students only.



Reserving Equipment 

Advanced Reservations for rentals are strongly encouraged. Reservations can be made up to two weeks in advance with a deposit equal to the item's daily rental rate. Reservations will not be held until the deposit is made. Refunds are provided for cancellations made 48 hours in advanced of the pick-up date. Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advanced will not receive a refund. 

  • Reservations will not be taken for free student rentals. If a student wishes to reserve equipment, they will be required to put down a deposit. 
  • Reservations can be made by calling the Rec Sports Main Office at 906-227-2519. A credit card is required for a reservation. 

Rental Information

The renter is responsible for equipment that is lost, stolen, or damaged and will be required to make financial restitution accordingly. The original renter must return equipment, unless prior arrangements with the rental center staff have been made. Late fees or cleaning fees may apply. 

  • Late fees: Fees will be equivalent to the daily rate. If not returned after three business days, a full replacement of the item may be required. 
  • Cleaning fees: Fees may range from $5-$25 depending on severity. 


  • Free student rentals (with the exception of bikes) must be returned within 24 hours from the time of the rental. Other guidelines/restrictions can be found HERE
  • Daily rentals must be returned within 24 hours from the time of the rental (disc golf will be by the hour). 
  • Three day rentals must be returned within 72 hours from the time of the rental. 
  • Seven day rentals must be returned within 168 hours from the time of the rental.

Cost: Free for current NMU students w/ student ID.

Length of rental: For the day. Must be returned by close.
