What is CAPP?

Curriculum, Advising and Program Planning (CAPP) degree evaluation is an advising tool used by both students and advisers to evaluate coursework against degree requirements. CAPP produces a report reflecting academic progress toward completion of a degree. The CAPP degree evaluation report shows how NMU courses, transfer courses and courses in progress apply toward degree requirements.

Important Reminders:

  • CAPP degree evaluations are not official unless they are run and reviewed by the Registrar’s Office and have “Official Degree Evaluation” stated at the top. Official evaluations are run after students have completed the minimum credits required [bachelor's - 87, associate's - 32, certificate - 16]. Evaluations run by students and advisers are intended to be used as an informal planning tool only.
  • CAPP will only include credits earned from fall 1993 to present.
  • CAPP has only been written for programs from fall 2004 to present. It can be run for students under bulletins earlier than 2004, but the evaluation will be based on requirements from 2004 to present.

Not all academic programs have been set up in CAPP. If you try to run CAPP and are unable to generate a report, it is likely your program is not available. The following programs are not available on CAPP:

  • any student admitted as a post-baccalaureate (until individualized evaluation is created by Degree Evaluation staff)
  • pre-professional (pre-med, pre-pharmacy, pre-vet, etc.)
  • general university studies associate degree without a declared concentration
  • majors/minors no longer offered or suspended by NMU
  • new majors/minors not yet added to CAPP

Prior to running a CAPP degree evaluation, we recommend you visit the Guide to Interpreting CAPP Degree Evaluations. It may be helpful to print this guide and reference it while reviewing your degree evaluation.

To access or run an informal degree evaluation:

  1. Log in to MyNMU
  2. Select “Student Services” tab
  3. Select “View/Run CAPP Degree Evaluation”

In general, requirements that still need to be addressed or completed are in red on the evaluation. Below is an explanation of the evaluation as you read from top to bottom.

This section provides your declared major, minor, and/or concentration as of the date the evaluation was run (noted in “Results as of:”).

The evaluation will run without all required degree components declared. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure required minors &/or concentrations are declared. Check the Northern Michigan University Undergraduate Bulletin (catalog) to see if your declared major requires a minor or concentration. All changes to your curriculum can be made online.

On the degree evaluation where your major (&/or minors/concentrations) are noted, there is an area which reads "Results as of:” The date given is the date the degree evaluation was run. The evaluation does not reflect changes made after this date, including changes to, or additions of majors, minors or concentrations.

Total Credits ‘REQUIRED’ for a degree and the number of credits “USED,” or applied, toward fulfilling requirements are in this section. Total Credits Required must be “MET” to graduate. Required number of institutional (NMU) credits, the last 20 of 30 credits, and program &/or overall GPA and NMU GPA are monitored manually and must be met to graduate.

Courses student has registered to take or which are currently in progress are applied to the evaluation and are designated a red 'Reg'’ under the SOURCE column on far right side of evaluation. The number of credits “Used’ includes registered credits and assumes you will complete them successfully. If registered courses are not successfully completed, requirements will change to “Not Met” on the next evaluation.

General education and graduation requirements are broken into the following categories: General Education, Natural Science Lab, World Culture, and Upper Division. Each category will indicate ‘Not Met’ or ‘Met’ next to the title, as appropriate. Registered courses are applied toward meeting requirements, so an area can indicate ‘MET’ when successful completion of registered courses is still required.

The “Yes” or “No” in the first column refers to whether or not the requirement has been met. Next is the course or other degree requirement, and then the course taken to fulfill that requirement. If the course is highlighted and there is a red 'Reg' in the column on the far right, that indicates that you are currently registered for, but have not yet completed, that course. Keep in mind, you must successfully complete the course for it to meet the given requirement.

At the end of each section, the total number of credits earned and in progress for that section will be listed. When a minimum number of credits are listed at the top of the section next to the title, the number of credits in the lower right corner must match or exceed the number at top to allow section to be ‘Met’.

The GPA in the lower right corner of the area ONLY uses NMU grades, not transfer. If major or minor requires a minimum grade point average, transfer grades must be manually calculated into the GPA. To verify graduation at the end of the last semester, the Degree Evaluation staff will manually recalculate the GPA using transfer grade(s) to ensure GPA requirements are met. For assistance in calculating a valid GPA, talk with your adviser. A GPA calculator can be found at www.nmu.edu/advising.

This is where important requirements are stated and information is written, such as minimum required grades or GPA’s. Read all notes.

The last item on the evaluation is the General Electives area. As noted on the evaluation, the number of general electives varies for every student. General credits are those needed above and beyond specific degree requirements to get you to the total credits required to complete your degree. Talk with your adviser if you have questions on how to determine the number of general credits you need. Examine courses in General Electives. If a minimum grade for major/minor course is not met, the course will fall into electives. It will move from electives to the major/minor once course is repeated and the necessary grade is earned. These courses should not be included as General Electives.

IMPORTANT: Review courses in the General Electives area which may fulfill open requirements in liberal studies, major, minor, or ‘other required’ areas. If you believe a course listed as a General Elective should be applied to another area, send and e-mail to the Degree Evaluation staff at degaudit@nmu.edu and ask for that requirement to be reviewed.

To print the Degree Evaluation, right click and select print. When selecting a printer, opt for color if possible. If printed in black and white, we suggest you highlight areas on the printed copy which are red on the evaluation. It’s more difficult to determine requirements printed on a black and white copy.

Questions regarding your program requirements should be addressed to your academic adviser. Feedback on how to improve the evaluation can be emailed at degaudit@nmu.edu.
