College of Business Scholarships Overview

Northern Michigan University offers a variety of types of scholarships including need-based, merit and college/program-specific. This page includeds  descriptions of scholarships that pertain to the College of Business.

Scholarships of $500 are available to assist full-time students who participate in a semester- or year-long NMU affiliated program (students studying abroad during the summer semester may be considered if they are enrolled full time) or on faculty-led travel programs. The number of scholarships awarded annually varies. Recipient must be at least sophomore status with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. First preference is given to students who choose to study business courses while on their study or travel abroad. Second preference is for students who choose to participate in a business-focused internship while abroad. Third preference is given to students who choose to study in a developing country, and fourth preference is for students who choose to study abroad for an academic year. The Office of International Affairs will interview the applicants and select recipients. See www.nmu.edu/international.

This scholarship was established in 2012 by a gift from Neil Bristol. The scholarship supports students majoring in Accounting. 

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Adam B. Cook

This scholarship was established in 2004 by Dr. Gary and Kimberly Brunswick in memory of Dr. Brunswick's paternal grandparents, who were lifelong residents of the Upper Peninsula. The recipient must be a full-time student majoring in marketing and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference will be given to students from the Upper Peninsula. The scholarship will be awarded based on the recommendation of the College of Business Scholarship Committee to the University Scholarship Committee, which will make the final selection.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: James R Callahan

Candidates must be students enrolled in the College of Business in a two- or four-year business program with a minimum GPA of 2.25.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Tobias Moosman

Recipient must be a full-time student majoring in management or marketing and must hold junior or senior status. Preference will be given to a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. The academic areas of management, marketing and computer information systems provides a list of four or five finalists by March 15 of each year for the contributors to review and make a recommendation to the University Committee on Financial Aids. The committee will then make the final decision. The contributors have requested that for each final list, the University provide them with a report summarizing the individual's need for the scholarship, including a family history, where applicable.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Ethan C. Elliot

Established in 2003 in honor of Dr. George Carnahan by NMU alumni who were members of the professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi. Dr. Carnahan was a founding faculty advisor of Alpha Kappa Psi and served as department head and dean of the School of Business during his 38 years at NMU. The scholarship supports students with a major in management.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Rhiannon C. Hintz

Candidates must be full-time students who will be juniors, seniors or graduate students with a major in business. Candidates must demonstrate leadership skills and show promise of future business success as evidenced by two letters from faculty, preferably at least one from a faculty member from the College of Business. A minimum 3.00 GPA is required. Special consideration will be given to Upper Peninsula students. The College of Business nominates qualified students to the University Scholarship Committee, which makes the final selection.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Adam Little and Saylor M. Stewart

Preference shall be given to students from the Upper Peninsula interested in the field of banking. Should no such student be available, a qualified student interested in business administration may be chosen. Consideration shall be given to the character, ability, and financial need of the student.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Kyle K Maki and Jedidiah T. Weber

Established in 2016 through gifts from family and friends of Matthew Croschere. Student must be full-time with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: James R. Callahan

The recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in Business or Education and a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. Nominations will be made by the Education and Business faculty, with final selection by the University Scholarship Committee.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Paige E. Currie

This scholarship will provide financial support to qualifying students participating in a finance program in the College of Business.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Kayleigh A. St. Martin

The recipient must be a College of Business student of junior status or above. Additionally, first priority will go to a student from the Chicago, Illinois area. Second priority will go to a resident of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient : Erik J. Tervonen

The scholarship was established by James and Pam Grundstrom in 2000. Student will be a full time junior or senior in the College of Business with a 2.5 GPA or higher.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Raeanne E. Candela

This scholarship was established in 2013 by Michael S. Hadden in loving memory of his wife Lynn S. Hadden. Student must be a full time accounting major, junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

This scholarship is awarded to a woman graduate or undergraduate students from the Upper Peninsula interested in the field of banking. Should there be no such student, a qualified woman student interested in business administration may be chosen. Consideration shall be given to the character, ability, and financial need of the student.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Erik J. Tervonen

This scholarship was established in 1988 by John W. Herbert. It is given annually to a junior accounting major whose performance in the classroom is evidenced by a grade point of not less than 3.0. This student's leadership ability is evidenced by outside activities, including leadership positions within those activities and interest and ability to pursue a career in public accounting.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Fawn Auge and James J. Henslee

This scholarship was established in 2012 by Timothy Herbert. Student will be a full time junior or senior Michigan resident majoring in Business or Finance with a 3.0 or higher GPA

This scholarship was established in 2016 by NMU alumnus Robert McIntyre 83', Branch President of The Horton Group. The awards are given to students majoring in Finance - Risk Management

This scholarship was established by Dr. John and Mrs. Aili '41 Imarisio. Student will be full time with a 3.0 or higher GPA in the College of Business.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Anna M. Messing and Emma G. Uren

This scholarship was established in 2019 with distributions from the Imarisio Endowed Fund. Student will be in the MBA program.

This scholarship was established in 1999 by Gloria and William Jackson. Candidates must be full-time students at Northern Michigan University.  Preference will be given to students who are graduates of Marquette Senior High School and are majoring in business. If no student meets the criteria then preference shall be as stated in the following order: graduates of any high school in the Upper Peninsula majoring in business; graduates of Marquette Senior High School in any major; and graduates of any high school in the Upper Peninsula in any major.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Alexis M. Armstrong and Travis J. Lindberg

This scholarship was established in 2015 by NMU alumnus Williams Kauppila 67' and his wife, Carol Kauppila. It will provide financial support to qualifying students enrolled in the College of Business majoring in accounting.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Isabel R. Anderson

Applicants will be full-time students with preference given to graduating seniors of Gwinn High School, followed by students from the Upper Peninsula who are majoring in business management.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Victoria L. Sorenson

This scholarship shall be used for students majoring in business in the College of Business. The recipient must be from the Upper Peninsula and have an NMU GPA of 2.75 or higher and demonstrate financial need. Candidates will be nominated by the College of Business Scholarship Committee and the final selection will be made by the University Scholarship Committee.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Joshua T Gosseck, Jacob M. Kerkela, Julia C. Koepel, Makenna L. Reno, and Emily J. Thennes

Recipient shall be an undergraduate student majoring in business administration. The student shall show leadership potential and promise for success in the business field. Financial need shall be clearly established.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Madeline R. Reschke

Established in 2011 to support students majoring in Accounting. A former Vice President for Finance with Cliffs Natural Resources, Mr. Leroux is retired and residing in Mesquite, Nevada. Student will be a full time accounting junior or senior with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Ashli M. Salokar

This scholarship was established in 2009 as a result of a gift from John F. List, Class of 1984.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Joshua T. Grosseck

This scholarship was established in 2015 through a gift from Teri List-Stoll. Student will be full time with a 3.5 or higher GPA. Preference given to Alpena High School students.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Samantha Grace Roubal

This scholarship was established in 2015 by Julie A. Loeber and Michael G. Loeber. Student will be a full time junior or senior in the College of Business with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

This scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of John M. Longyear by John M. Longyear Heirs, a Limited Partnership. Candidates must be full-time students of sophomore status or above majoring in business. Renewable up to three years after initial award.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Samantha Grace Roubal

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student with junior standing in the College of Business, majoring in computer information systems, who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.25. The student should demonstrate financial need by employment to meet education goals. Preference will be given to a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. The Ludlow Scholarship Committee will nominate candidates to the University Scholarship Committee, which will make the final award.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Hailey A. Currie and James J. Henslee

This scholarship shall assist full-time undergraduate students majoring in accounting. Those eligible must have a preference for (or a strong interest in) the field of public accounting. The candidates must also show evidence of outstanding ability and potential based on scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character, extracurricular activities, etc. Primary consideration will be given to students not receiving grants from other sources. Awards should be made to students entering their last two semesters prior to receiving the baccalaureate degree.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Carter B. Mason and Brandon P. Rogers

This scholarship was established in 2007 in honor of Phyllis and Carlo Maki by friends and family. The student will be a full time freshman or sophomore non-traditional student with a major in accounting, computer information systems or finance with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Preference is given to residents of the upper peninsula.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Cynthia L. Nash

Established in 2006 by a bequest from James T. Malsack to support students with a major in business administration.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Grace E. Mattson, Makenzie M. Rajala, and Lauren A. Rygiel

This scholarship is awarded to native Michigan Students interested in a career in the insurance industry.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Kyle K. Maki and Elissa B. Griffin

Candidates must be juniors or seniors majoring in business administration. They must be an active member of Institute of Managerial Accountants. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required. Selected by Michigan Upper Peninsula Chapter of IMA Board.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Tyler J. Skufca

The recipient must be a full-time junior or senior who graduated from an Upper Peninsula high school and has achieved at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA while in attendance at NMU.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Marcus J. Krachinski

This scholarship was established in 2016 by Eric and Kim Pearson and supports a junior or senior in the College of Business.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Alex M. Roell

Recipient must be a deserving full-time junior or senior majoring in business at Northern Michigan University. Preference shall be given to a high school graduate from Marquette or Menominee counties. Recipient must have a minimum GPA of 3.00. The College of Business will nominate qualified candidates to the University Scholarship Committee, which will make the final selection.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Paul Clarke

This scholarship was established in 2017 by Mrs. Helen Peters in memory of her husband. Student will be full time in the College of Business with a 3.0 or higher GPA. Preference will be given to veterans.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Corey A. Allen

Preference will be given to students from Marquette, Crawford and Otsego counties. Preference will also be given to students enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, the College of Business. The University Scholarship Committee will make the final selection from nominations made through the Financial Aid Office.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients: Brittany E. Nardi, Mackenzie M. Rajala, Hailey E. Smith, and Becca-Lynn V. Thiel

Student must be a Business or Finance major from Marquette County.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Morgan M. Chidester

Recipients must be a full-time junior or senior in the College of Business and have a GPA of 3.25 or higher. The recipient must also be a graduate of an Upper Peninsula high school. The faculty of the College of Business nominates candidates to the University Scholarship Committee, which makes the final decision.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Caitlyn R. Hendrickson

This scholarship was established in 2016 through the generosity of James and Christine Speaker, both graduates of the College of Business.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Taylor A. Warren

This scholarship was established in 2010 by Ernie Telford for students participating in the risk management program. Recipients must be a full-time junior in the College of Business and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher

This scholarship was established in 2010 for students pursuing a degree in the College of Business. Recipients must be a full-time junior or senior in the College of Business and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Jacob C. Moore

This scholarship was established in 2014 by VAST. The scholarship will provide financial support to a junior or senior participating in the College of Business Risk Management and Insurance program with a 3.0 or higher GPA.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Gavin R. Kerley

The recipient must be a full-time student who has completed one semester of full-time undergraduate study, has maintained a 3.00 GPA and is enrolled in a program of study in the office administration and/or business education. Preference is given to students from the Upper Peninsula. Selection of the recipient of the scholarship will be made by the faculty in those academic areas.

The recipient must be a Michigan resident and a full-time student in the College of Business. Preference will be given to candidates who are from the Upper Peninsula and who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. Candidates will be nominated by the College of Business, and the final selection will be made by the University Scholarship Committee. At least two scholarships of up to the amount of sixteen credit hours of in-state tuition per semester will be awarded annually (depending upon earnings available).

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipients:  Joshua T. Grosseck and Julia C. Koepel

This scholarship will be awarded to an Upper Peninsula resident who is an athlete in basketball, football or swimming. Preference will be given to those studying in the School of Education, Leadership and Public Service, College of Business or School of Nursing.

  • 2020-21 Scholarship Recipient: Adam Little

This scholarship was established in 2015 by Robert Young in memory of her husband. The student will be full time in the College of Business with a 2.5 or higher GPA.
