Northern MBA News and Information

Congratulations to the MBA class of 2012!
This graduating class marks the return of the MBA program at NMU. They came together in the fall of 2010 as a group of strangers from a diverse set of backgrounds involved in the nascent program, tentative in their interactions with one another while attempting to respond in a positive way to the inherent awkwardness of working with new people.  Over their two years of course work, they have come to recognize each other’s strengths and to leverage their shared interests to create a powerful learning experience.  Class discussions were vigorous but respectful of differences of opinion in a way that created a less competitive, more collaborative, us-against-the-world type of environment. NMU wishes this class luck as they continue on in challenging and fulfilling careers.

MBA Class of 2012 provides local organizations with strategic analysis
The NMU Winter 2012 Master of Business Administration students in the capstone course of the program, BUS 590 Strategic Management, applied all of their various business tools and skills for the benefit of local organizations in the projects that wrapped up the semester.  Firms such as the new flower shop Flowerworks, the Marquette Golf Club, Blackrocks Brewery and Great Lakes Recovery Centers, Inc. were treated to case studies and presentations all about them.  Analyses included a thorough discussion of the environment in which the organizations operate, the strengths and weaknesses of their business model and recommendations as to how best to move forward in order to leverage opportunities and mitigate threats.  The students are grateful to the local community for supporting their efforts and to these organizations for giving them access to (sometimes confidential) information about their plans and operations.
