An FRT tradition rings in the holiday season! The Dickens classic is brought to life once again by NMU students and faculty along with locals from the Marquette community. A musical retelling of “A Christmas Carol,” Scrooge! shows us the journey of a bitter old miser's discovery of the true meaning of Christmas, courtesy of good folks and strange ghosts. Devin Murphy (Ebenezer Scrooge) is a Theatre major and Communications minor at Northern Michigan University. He has appeared in Les Miserables (Forest Roberts Theatre), Chicago (Forest Roberts Theatre), Spamalot (Lake Superior Theatre), King Lear (Lake Superior Theatre), the Ten-Minute Play Festival (Black Box Theatre), Holdin’ Our Own (Forest Roberts Theatre), The Secret Garden (Forest Roberts Theatre), The Producers (Lake Superior Theatre), Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up? (Lake Superior Theatre), Where a Certain Future (Forest Roberts Theatre), Scrooge! (Forest Roberts Theatre), The Addams Family (Forest Roberts Theatre), and Grease (Lake Superior Theatre).
Nathaniel Langlie (Bob Cratchit) is a sophomore Theatre and Outdoor Rec double major with a minor in Dance. Nathaniel is excited to bring this amazing story to the stage for the second time. Nathaniel has appeared previously at Northern in Noises Off, The Addams Family, Scrooge!, and the Worth a Second Glance Cabaret. As well as being the scenic designer for APO's production of The Bold, the Young, and the Murdered, Nathaniel will also appear later this season in Antigone, the NMU Dance Concert, and Tarzan. He hopes that you enjoy this beautiful story, and "God bless us, Everyone."
Jill Vermeulen† (Ethel Cratchit) is an NMU senior majoring in Theatre and Communications with a Dance minor. Some of her favorite roles include Noises Off (Belinda), The Addams Family (Morticia), Proof (Claire), Little Shop of Horrors (Crystal), She Kills Monsters (Kaliope) and Chicago (Hunyak) at the Forest Roberts Theatre and The Producers (Ulla) at Lake Superior Theatre. Jill spent the summer of 2017 working as a Marketing Intern at Adirondack Theatre Festival in New York. She is currently a Student Writer at NMU Marketing and Communications. She would like to thank her family and boyfriend Tom for their incredible support.
Abigail Harma (Kathy Cratchit) has performed in James and the Giant Peach, The Lion King Jr., Cinderella, Kids Sing Broadway, Schoolhouse Rock Jr., and Shrek Jr. She enjoys all aspects of theatre from working the spotlights in tech crew to making props for shows. She has taken lessons in tap, ballet, hip hop, dance, gymnastics, sewing, voice and violin. She also runs cross country and is on student council at Bothwell Middle School. Abigail’s favorite Broadway musicals are Wicked and Hamilton. She is very excited to perform as Kathy Cratchit in Scrooge, as it is her first named character role.
Zeke Miller (Tiny Tim) has loved theatre since the first time he he saw Seussical at the age of three. It was that performance that inspired him at the age of 3 to to audition for Narnia and he was in his first play as a reindeer. Since then it has been a passion of Zeke's and he still to this day can’t wait to get to that next audition. Zeke is excited to be in this year’s production of Scrooge and this excitement will surely shine through as you watch him in his role as Tiny Tim.
Monica Nordeen (Jacob Marley) has recently appeared in the following roles on local stages: Maude Mix in A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking and Sarah in Where a Certain Future at the FRT; Truvy in Steel Magnolias at Lake Superior Theatre; Melissa in Love Letters and Valerie in The Weir with Vertigo Theatre Company; Lady Capulet in Romeo & Juliet with U.P. Shakespeare Festival; and Trisha in Five Women Wearing the Same Dress with Twirly Hug Productions. Last year she was honored to perform the role of Amy Lee in a production of Laundry & Bourbon in NYC. Monica earned her B.A. in Theatre & Mathematics from the State University of New York at Geneseo.
Teagan Sturmer (The Ghost of Christmas Past) is a Creative Writing alumni from NMU and part owner of Velodrome Coffee Company in downtown MQT. She has previously performed as Charlotte in Oliver! (Braumart Theatre), and this past summer, as Shelby in Steel Magnolias (Lake Superior Theatre).
Bobby Glenn Brown (The Ghost of Christmas Future / Fezziwig) is an FRT and outstanding alumni award recipient from NMU. He holds an MFA from UNLV, Las Vegas. He’s performed in a variety of venues locally, regionally as well in outdoor dramas, cruise-ship, theme parks, and touring with Kenny Rogers. This is his 28th performance in Scrooge. Thank you Dr. P, the Roberts family, Faye, Don, and Lynndee!
Faye Elder (Fezziwig's Wife) enjoyed a 25-year career in Southern California in professional entertainment. As an actress, vocalist, comedian, and stunt person, she performed with iconic star celebrities. Locally known to some for her past “Mrs. Consumer” radio and television commercials, and the five year host of the wildly successful “Dancing with our Stars” fundraiser, she continues to lend her expertise and talents to many media projects. She is delighted to be Bobby's “other half” for this year's holiday production.
Jeremiah Ogawa (Tom Jenkins) is a junior at Marquette Senior High School and has been in many NMU productions over the years, including The Addams Family (Pugsley) and Les Miserables (Gavroche). He is also a member and youth board member of Superior Arts Youth Theatre, and has performed in Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr. (Elvis). Jeremiah enjoys hot sauce and Netflix.
Charlie Edwards (Simpkins) is a junior English Writing major with a double minor in Dance and Computer Information Systems. He has appeared in local ballet productions of The Nutcracker (Soldier Doll/Nutcracker), Alice in Wonderland (Caterpillar), La Sylphide (James), as well as in Ebenezer Scrooge: Jazzed Up Like the Dickens (Ensemble) and Mary Poppins (Ensemble). Charlie was assistant choreographer for Once on this Island Jr. and dance captain for The Wizard of Oz. At NMU, Charlie performs in and choreographs for the NMU Dance Concerts and dances with the NMU Hip Hop Dance Crew. This is Charlie’s first theater production with NMU and he is very excited to share his talents with all of you.
Nicholas Conroy (Young Ebenezer / Chorus) is 18 and a senior at Ishpeming High School. He has been in many local productions over the years, most recently as Eugene in the LST summer 2017 show Grease. He has recently gotten more backstage experience as a Summer Acting Camp Counselor and assistant directing the SAYT production Shrek the Musical Jr. Performing in A Christmas Carol has become a holiday tradition for Nicholas. This year marks his 7th time appearing in various local productions of Scrooge! He would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hope you all enjoy this season of giving.
Winston Leonard (Young Ebby / Urchin) says his favorite part of being in theatre is finding out what part he will get. You may recognize him from last year’s production of Scrooge!, Schoolhouse Rock, The Lion King, Shrek, Cinderella, or many others. Winston loves to get into the mindset of different characters! When he’s not on stage, he enjoys being outdoors, playing the piano, singing, and playing soccer.
Riley Fields (Isabel / Chorus) is a newcomer to the Marquette area. She and her husband Alex work for Contrast Coffee Company, where she is the social media coordinator and content creator. Riley is so excited to make Scrooge her first production here in Marquette!
Nate Wood (Turkey Boy / Urchin) is 9 years old and is a 4th grader at North Star Montessori Academy. He has played Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and has been in two SAYT productions: Schoolhouse Rock Jr. and Shrek the Musical Jr. He will be playing Boq the Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz for North Star this coming February. Nate loves everything about the theater, especially singing, dancing, and spending time with his friends backstage. Outside of theater, Nate likes playing with his friends, reading, being with his brother and sister, and spending time with his cat and dog.
Adrienne Vermeulen (Woman Ware Seller / Chorus) is an Oakland University graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing specializing in pediatric and NICU care. She is secretary of the First Nighter's Club, serving as a board member since 2015. Her theatrical involvement as an audience member and youth theater mom spans more than 20 years. Adrienne excitedly returns to the FRT stage in Scrooge! for her second time. In her free time, she is an avid inline skater and hiker. She would like to thank her family for their unconditional love and support; Adrienne dedicates her performance to her 91-year-old father for whom she is the primary caretaker.
Lori Ogawa-Mentink (Woman Ware Seller / Chorus) is performing in Scrooge! for her second time this year. She loved being part of the cast and crew last year, especially being on stage with her son Jeremiah. She had to experience the stage life one more time! Her involvement in theatre includes volunteering as a backstage mom for Superior Arts Youth Theatre. She is also a board member for NMU’s First Nighter’s Club.
Cheryl Rehmann (Woman Ware Seller / Chorus) is a Certified Orthotic Fitter for Northern Orthotics and Prosthetics. She attend NMU in the 80's as a music major. During those years, she music directed Scrooge! 5 times and played in many pit orchestras, but was never on stage. This is Cheryl's second year performing in Scrooge! and she is having fun with old and new friends in the production. She hopes that everyone enjoys the show and wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a very joyful New Year.
Tanner Parish (Toy Shop Owner / Chorus) is currently a junior at Northern Michigan University, and studies theatre. His past performances include Thomas O'Malley in The Aristocats, Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Dr. Evil in Dr. Evil and the Basket of Kittens. He also has dank memes.
Katie Spengler (Shopper and Singer / Chorus) is from Lake Orion Michigan and Scrooge! is her first play at FRT. She is a freshman at NMU studying Environmental Studies and Sustainability. In high school, Katie has been in musicals such as The Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie, Into the Woods, and Anything Goes. She is very excited to continue to participate in theater in college and hopes you enjoy the show!
Dorothy Paad (Shopper and Singer / Chorus) is a freshman at NMU pursuing a degree in Applied Workplace Leadership. Her primary interest is education, but she also enjoys the arts. Always an enthusiastic audience member, Scrooge! is her first time as a cast member. She also enjoys music; she has performed with the University choir and has taken several dance classes.
Heather Bliss (Shopper and Singer / Chorus) is a Conservation Officer and this is her first theater production since 6th grade - many many moons ago. Heather enjoys working with children in the outdoor recreation field, mountain biking, surfing, dancing, singing, and animals.
Addy Menhennick (Urchin) is 6 years old and attends kindergarten at Superior Hills Elementary School in Marquette. She loves to dance, sing and put on “shows” at home. She also enjoys all types of arts and crafts. Addy has been in Superior Arts Youth Theater productions since she was 3 years old and was in last year’s FRT production of Scrooge! She loves theater because she gets to dance and wear costumes and makeup. When she grows up, Addy would like to be a teacher.
DJ Menhennick (Urchin) is 8 years old and attends 2nd grade at Superior Hills Elementary School in Marquette. He loves playing sports - especially hockey, soccer and baseball. He is also a reading fanatic! DJ has been in four previous Superior Arts Youth Theater productions and last year’s FRT production of Scrooge! He loves theater mostly because of all his awesome theater friends but also because he enjoys being in front of an audience. When he grows up, DJ would like to be either an FBI agent or an archeologist.
Payton Bullock (Urchin) has been in numerous Superior Arts Youth Theater performances over the last few years, and this is her second year doing Scrooge! She loves to perform, take dance, ukulele and voice lessons, spend time with her friends and family, ski, and play the ukulele.
Reya Ghiardi (Urchin), age 9, is in fourth grade at Graeveret. Her NMU theater experience began as a dreamer in The Secret Garden, followed by Kathy Cratchit in the 2016 production of Scrooge! Reya became involved with SAYT in 2014, playing the role of Gracie Shinn in Music Man, Jr. Other productions include Mary Poppins, Kids Sing Broadway 2015 and 2017, Once on This Island, Jr., Aladdin, Jr., Wizard of Oz, James and the Giant Peach, Jr., Lion King, Jr., Cinderella, School House Rock Jr. and Shrek Jr. She enjoys cooking, piano, skiing and fishing. She thanks her family for their enthusiasm, and both NMU and SAYT for the opportunities she's been given!
Roenak Ghiardi (Urchin), age 11, is in fifth grade at Graeveret. His first NMU theater experience was with last year’s production of Scrooge! and he is thrilled to be back again! Roenak first became involved with the Superior Arts Youth Theater in 2015, joining the cast of Mary Poppins. Other productions include Kids Sing Broadway 2015 and 2017, Once on This Island, Jr., Aladdin, Jr., Wizard of Oz, James and the Giant Peach, Jr., Lion King, Jr., Cinderella, School House Rock Jr. and Shrek Jr. He likes biking, skiing, basketball and all things science. He would like to thank his family for their encouragement and is extremely grateful to both NMU and SAYT!
Christian Leonard (Urchin) says his favorite part of being in theatre is singing and being with friends. He loves to participate in plays because they entertain people. Amongst many others, Christian has previously performed in Schoolhouse Rock, The Lion King, and Cinderella. Other than acting, he can be found building with Legos, doing arts and crafts, or playing outside!
Creative Team Bios
Denise Clark (Director) has been directing and acting in various venues for the past 25+ years, including PAAC, (Mother Superior in Nunsense), NMU (director and author of Ebenezer Scrooge and director of Scrooge), Lake Superior Theatre (Steel Magnolias), and Ishpeming High School (Footloose), to name a few. Denise is happy to be working at Northern and directing this production and meeting a new generation of students. Due to the fundraising nature of this event, she hopes that this venture is both an artistic and financial success, as providing students with scholarships to attend Northern is a wonderful mission that she is proud to be a part of. Thanks to all who are here and support the arts in our area, you are why we create.
Hannah Cormier† (Properties Master) is majoring in theatre technology and design and double minors in public relations and dance. Past technical credits include properties master for The Secret Garden (2016), Where a Certain Future (2016), The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon (2016), assistant stage manager for The Producers (2016) and stage manager for In a Mason Jar (2017). She enjoys working in the scene shop at NMU and would like to thank her friends and family for their ever-present love and support. Enjoy the show!
Jill Grundstrom (Choreographer) is the Program Director for the NMU dance minor, has a BS from NMU in secondary education with majors in English and French, a MA in dance education from NYU, and is certified in the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. She was also the author of the dance blog for Fox's So You Think You Can Dance during seasons four through seven. Miss Grundstrom is the resident choreographer for the Superior Arts Youth Theatre, Lake Effect Show Choir, and NMU theatre productions. she was the recipient of the MACC Outstanding Performing Artist of the Year Award in 2011.
Victor G. Holliday (Scenic Design) has been the designer for the Forest Roberts Theatre since 1982, and also served as technical director from 1982-2000. He holds a bachelor of arts in phsychology from St. Johns University (Minnesota), and his master of fine arts in scenic design from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Before coming to NMU, he was designer and technical director at Trenton State College (now the College of New Jersey). Vic has also designed for summer and community theatre companies in Hawaii, Michigan, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Outside of the theatre, his major interests are history (particularly military and naval history), ship modeling (pre-deadnought steel navy), and he is an active ailurophile.
Lily Howder† (Lighting Designer) is a senior Theatre major at Northern, and she is so excited to be light designing this show. Lily was the previous Vice President for APO and for the past two years she has held the position of President. She hopes you enjoy the show!
Regan McKay† (Costume Designer) is a junior Theatre/English major and Dance minor, and the current Vice President of Alpha Psi Omega. She also works as a seamstress in the FRT Costume Shop and the librarian of the Rapport Theatre Library. Regan has worked as costume mistress on Into the Woods and The Addams Family and dramaturg on Where A Certain Future at the FRT. This season, she has costume designed both The Bold, The Young, and the Murdered and Scrooge!, and she will be working as dramaturg on Antigone in the 2018 Fringe Festival. She would like to thank her parents, her sister Maddie, her boyfriend Paul, and her many APO friends for their incredible encouragement and support.
David Pierce (Technical Director) came to NMU from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY where he had been technical director for the department of theatre and dance. Other TD credits include Adirondack Theatre Festival, Little Theatre on the Square, and Four Seasons Theatre Company. David holds a BS in construction management from Ferris State University and an MFA in theatre technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In his spare time, he loves to be outdoors. He enjoys hiking, boating, fishing, biking, and bonfires. He's also a boisterous Tigers fan!
Dan Zini (Sound Designer / Projection Designer / Lighting and Sound Supervisor) is an audio/recording engineer, sound/lighting designer and bassist from Marquette. An alum of NMU, Dan has returned to the FRT while studying for an MA in English. Before returning to NMU, Dan served as technical director/production designer for the Besse Center Theatre. Apart from many shows with the FRT, his credits include sound design for Mary Poppins Jr. with SAYT and The Producers at Lake Superior Theatre, audio engineer for Josh Davis and Hershey Entertainment, lighting design for the 2016 Marquette Blues Fest and numerous other concert and theatre productions.
