Academic Senate
Northern Michigan University’s Academic Senate advises and makes recommendations to the vice president for Academic Affairs on matters of faculty-wide concern, communicates items of concern to their respective constituencies and informs the academic community of issues under consideration.
NMU's Academic Senate
NMU’s Academic Senate is a product of the negotiated collective bargaining agreement between NMU’s AAUP faculty and the Board of Trustees, Article 3.3. It is the body where governance of our university is shared between faculty, administration, and students. It consists of senators who represent all AAUP-associated academic colleges, schools and departments, Academic Deans, a Department Head from each college, and student government representatives. Along with the executive committee, the Senate has 11 other committees that relate to all aspects of the Northern academic experience. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success (PVPAA) and a representative of the AAUP Executive Committee serve as ex-officio members without voting power.
All NMU faculty, staff and students are welcome to observe Senate meetings.

Statement on Civility
The Executive Committee of the Academic Senate wishes to remind all who participate in Senate proceedings that, while we encourage and value discussion, debate, and questions, we expect civility and professionalism. Disagreement on proposals and ideas is part of our realm, but we must stay clear of personal attacks or statements that suggest a lack of respect for each other; rather, we need to examine items of business on their merits and maintain an atmosphere of collegiality.
