Wildcat Transfer Checklist

Use Transferology, a free online tool, to get an unofficial rundown on your college credit. See how close to a degree at NMU you could be! Add your prior schools, test credits, and military credits to see how NMU accepts them for transfer. Most college-level courses with a "C-" or higher grade from a regionally accredited institution will transfer. We accept up to 90 semester credits from 2-year colleges and no limit on credits from 4-year institutions. Read the full Transfer Credit Policy in the NMU Bulletin.

Apply now! Deadlines? NMU has rolling admissions, so apply when it's convenient for you! Check the semester start dates below to give yourself enough time to complete the process, though.
Send NMU all of your official college transcripts including current in-progress coursework (AP and early college or dual enrollment can be submitted after admission). Less than 12 college credits after high school? Send us both your final high school transcript and college transcripts, too.

Complete your FAFSA and find out if there is more financial aid eligible for you! Have NMU's school code 002301 on your form.

Set up your MyNMU account when you are admitted and start using your NMU email address.

Register for Orientation. Let's make your transition to NMU even smoother by leveraging your knowledge and skills in prior college classes! You must either complete online Orientation or have in-person Orientation confirmed before you can register for classes as a new student.

Apply for campus housing after you are admitted to NMU. Depending on your completed credit totals, age, and community interests NMU has something for YOU! Choose from residence halls and campus apartments.

"I decided to come to NMU because I was looking for a school where the professors cared about the successes of their students... NMU is the best choice I’ve made as a transfer student. The faculty and staff have been so supportive, and have helped me navigate the challenges as a transfer student."

Transfer Credit Policy

Transfer Credit Policies (For Undergraduate Transfer Students and First-Year Students with College Credit)

Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended must be sent to NMU*.  Joint Services Transcripts (JST) for military training are optional and consultation with a Transfer Specialist is recommended.

If a transfer course is equivalent to a Northern Michigan University course, a direct course equivalency will be granted even if the number of credits is different. Transfer courses must be at least one-half of the credit hours of their equivalent NMU course. You will receive up to the total external credit hours earned. For example, a course taken at a college that is 3-semester credits and equivalent to a course at NMU that is 4 semester credit hours will be shown on your Transfer Credit Evaluation for 3 credit hours of the equivalent course. Any non-semester credit, such as Quarter hours, will be converted to semester hours during the evaluation process.

Read the entire current Transfer Credit Policy on the University Bulletin below.

*If the number of credits you will transfer exceeds the number of credits required to earn your NMU degree, please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss any potential impact on your scholarship and/or financial aid eligibility.

If you have specific questions, a Transfer Specialist can also assist you. Feel free to e-mail us at transfer@nmu.edu.
