Opportunity Given-Opportunity Taken
Recent graduate Mike Michalek entered NMU on Freshman Probation, perhaps more than a little unsure of himself. During his four years at NMU he has emerged as a strong, confident student and independent thinker. A Geographic Information Science major, Mike conducted research at NMU and with the US Geological Survey office. He was also invited to present a poster at the Association of American Geographers: West Lakes Conference, has made five public presentations and has credits in two publications.
Mike has been an active participant in Student Support Services since he came to NMU in 2008, participating in numerous activities while serving on the SSS Student Advisory Board, on which he provided significant input and leadership. He has actively participated in the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, participating in all required activities, and earning a research stipend while preparing for his pursuit of a Ph.D. Mike has recently been accepted into graduate school at Michigan State where he will continue his education.
Beyond this, Mike has excellent personal attributes. He is considerate, cooperative, and reliable. He is always willing to go the extra mile. Most importantly, Mike is a genuinely good person and a role model for all of his SSS and NMU peers.
