Young Wildcat Scholars

The Young Wildcat Scholars is an annual event bringing together sixth graders from all six charter schools that Northern Michigan University authorizes. The students and chaperones spend two and a half days on campus taking academic classes and attending large group activities. This college experience provides the students a better understanding of higher education and what Northern Michigan University has to offer. Over 200 students attended the 2013 Young Wildcat Scholars program.

How To Apply

Right now, Northern Michigan University is not accepting applications for a PSA, but when the application process opens, more information will be posted. Parents interested in sending their children to a PSA can visit any of the school's websites to find application materials specific to that school.

South Pointe Scholars

Opened in 2012, the newest of NMU's charter schools is South Pointe Scholars Charter Academy. It is located in Ypsilanti, Mich. and grades K-8 are offered. Read this AnnArbor.com article about the new school.
Nah Tah Wahsh

Nah Tah Wahsh PSA is located in Wilson, Mich. and serves grades K-12. For news and information about the school, sign up for the student newsletter.
Bahweting Anishnabe
Bahweting Anishnabe is located in Saulte Ste. Marie, Mich. Bahweting Anishnabe currently has 458 students. For a list of the school's upcoming events and its annual report, visit the Bahweting Anishnabe website.
Burton Glen
students on exercise ballsBurton Glen Charter Academy serves grades K-8 and has 682 students. It is located in Burton, Mich. which is just five miles from Flint. Students at Burton Glen are utilizing exercise balls to sit on in class instead of standard chairs. This will help them dispel energy and allow the students to concentrate on their classwork and studies. 
North Star Academy

North Star Academy is located in Marquette, Mich. It became a public school academy chartered by Northern Michigan University in 1997. Recently North Star Academy students helped native plant restoration. Learn more about this service project in the Marquette Mining Journal.
Walton Charter Academy

walton charter schoolWalton Charter Academy is located in Pontiac, Mich. Walton serves grades K-8, has about 807 students and was established in 1999. The school was recently designated a School of Excellence. To see a video of the ceremony, visit the school's website.
