Achievements
NMU
surpassed the 5,000 threshold for campus visitors for the past academic
year. Gina Lombardini (Admissions) reports that
a total of 5,099 prospective students and family members traveled
to NMU in 2003-04.
A
campus visit can be the determining factor in a student’s decision
on where to attend college. Lombardini said nearly 70 percent of
the students who set foot on campus and apply for admission eventually
enroll at NMU.
“We've
always suspected that students who visit NMU prior to enrolling
have a higher retention rate than those who don't visit,” she added.
“It’s one of the best ways to find out if a college is the right
fit for the individual. At NMU, prospective students can speak with
a faculty member in their anticipated major to learn about classes
and future careers. They can meet with current NMU students to find
out what their experiences are like. They can tour the campus to
get a feel for the environment, eat in a cafeteria, sit in on a
lecture or check out a dorm room. These are things they can't do
as well over the Internet or by reading a brochure.”
