Wong Delivers Convocation

NMU President Les Wong delivered his inaugural fall convocation address Wednesday afternoon.

He said the university will begin deliberate discussions on how it can position itself to offer a “Curriculum for the 21st Century.” Full Story

Northern Michigan University is one of the best public universities in the Midwest, according to the 2005 college rankings released by U.S. News & World Report.

NMU is ranked 13th in the “top tier” among master’s-level public institutions.

Excellence in Teaching Awards Presented

Thomas A. Hyslop (English) and Patricia I. Hogan (HPER) and are recipients of the 2004 NMU Excellence in Teaching Awards. They were honored at Wednesday’s fall convocation, where each received a plaque and $1,000 check. Full Story

Robbie Goodrich (History) is the new director of the NMU Honors Program, which is entering its seventh year. Full Story

‘Be a Part from the Start’

Employees are encouraged to participate in Welcome Weekend 2004, which features a full slate of activities to kick-start the academic year.

A highlight is the annual “Be a Part from the Start” all-student rally at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, at the Berry Events Center. For a full schedule of activities, go to Welcome Weekend.

 

Record TLC Distribution in Progress

The largest-ever notebook computer distribution coincides with Welcome Weekend. Spurred by increasing enrollment, NMU will issue about 6,300 new notebook computers to incoming freshmen.

Nearly 5,200 returning students will exchange their two-year old machines for new models. Full Story

 

Board Requests Final Public Broadcasting Proposal

 

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees has requested a firm recommendation on the future of the NMU public broadcasting stations by its next meeting in October. For Aug. 5-6 highlights, go to Full Story.

 

NMU Implements Fraud Policy

 

A policy approved in July officially states Northern’s longstanding position regarding fraudulent activities: they will be taken seriously and dealt with appropriately.

The policy also provides information on how NMU employees can report instances of fraud anonymously with assurances of “whistleblower protection” that prevents them from being penalized or facing other repercussions.

Student service and support offices have moved into the newly renovated C.B. Hedgcock facility. For new locations and floorplans of the building, go to C.B. Hedgcock.

TAS Joins Professional Studies

Technology and Applied Sciences has transitioned from its own college to a school within the College of Professional Studies, similar to Nursing and Education.

Bill Rigby (TAS) becomes an associate dean of the college. Rigby said he will also serve as head of the two departments within the new school: Engineering Technology and Occupational Sciences.

FOREST ROBERTS THEATRE SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

The 2004-05 season at Forest Roberts Theatre – titled “Be Our Guest” – will feature a Neil Simon comedy, the world premiere of a new black comedy, the musical retelling of “a tale as old as time,” and a comedy from French neo-classic theatre. Full Story
