Singh's 'MAGIC' Film on Tuesday

NMU Professor Jaspal Singh's documentary "MAGIC: Making Art Grow in Children" (pictured) will be shown at 3 p.m. in the commons area of Whitman Hall as part of the 2008 UNITED Conference's Tuesday (Sept. 23) schedule.

The film records Singh's recent visit to South Africa and her work with Steenberg Township school children and student teachers from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Tuesday's schedule features seven films as part of the UNITED in FILMS series.  Full UNITED Schedule.



Conference Highlights
Sook Wilkinson Governor Granholm’s Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs will attend the UNITED Conference, following its Sept. 21 meeting at NMU. Some members will also make presentations. The Council invites Asian Pacific American members of the Upper Peninsula community to meet with it on Sept. 21 to discuss issue impacting their lives in the U.P.  Learn more about ACAPAA
UNITED in Art The DeVos Art Museum is partnering with the UNITED Conference to present a special exhibition of national and international artists, which runs from Sept. 15-Dec. 22. Many of the images on display are on loan from the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Columbia College Chicago. (Pictured: The Walk, Loretta Lux). The DeVos Museum is open Monday-Wednesday, 10 am. - 5 p.m., Thursday noon - 8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 1-4 p.m.

2008 UNITED Conference

The 2008 UNITED Conference is Sunday through Tuesday, Sept. 21-23. There are more than 50 presentations and performances in the tracks of art, dance, diversity, film, food and research.


Release Time for NMU Employees

NMU employees wishing to participate in the UNITED conference will be granted up to two hours of release time with prior supervisory approval.  Release time questions should be directed to the Human Resources department.


UNITED CEU's Available

Continuing education credits are available to teachers attending or virtually attending NMU’s 2008 UNITED Conference. The UNITED course is one credit and requires written papers about  various conference presentations. 


UNITED in Film

Scene from the movie UNREPENTANTFilmmaker Kevin Annette will be on hand to introduce and discuss his internationally recognized documentary, UNREPENTANT: Kevin Annett and Canada’s Genocide (2006).  This controversial film tells a horror story of abuse and murder in Canada’s residential school system for Indigenous children.  Arnett asks: A Canadian Holocaust?
