2015 UNITED CONFERENCE: UNITING NEIGHBORS IN THE EXPERIENCE OF DIVERSITY

 

The 10th annual UNITED Conference will be held September 20-23, 2015.
UNITED is NMU's yearly diversity conference and is free and open to the public.
In honor of this year's milestone anniversary, Monday's schedule will focus on NMU alumni and community member presenters.

2015 UNITED Speakers
Cathy Bao Bean

Educator, author, and speaker Cathy Bao Bean
uses humor to examine issues of diversity in
American society and promotes the "chopsticks-fork principle" for greater awareness of the diversity within and around us.

Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz

Musicians Ginny Hawker and Tracy Schwarz bring the sweet harmonies of American traditional music to Marquette to kick off the UNITED Conference on Sunday evening, Sept. 20.

Allison Hobgood

Allison Hobgood is Associate Professor of English with Women's and Gender Studies Programs affiliations at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. Her focus of study is foremost the field of Disability Studies, especially as it involves a range of embodiment issues in the early modern period concerning the overlap
between disability and gender, class, and race.

Holly Barcus

Holly Barcus is Associate Professor of Geography at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. Her research interests focus on ethnic minority migration, rural livelihood sustainability, and the implications of migration for rural communities, primarily in Mongolia and North America.

 

Harry Bradshaw Matthews

NMU alumnus Harry Bradshaw Matthews, Associate Dean and Director of U.S. Pluralism Programs in the Office of Intercultural Affairs at Hartwick College, will speak about the development of the African American identity during the pre-Civil War years and its impact on today's discussion of race and diversity in America.

Vasu Primlani

Vasu Primlani  is a professional comedian and corporate trainer.  Called 'funny and defiant' by the BBC, she is one of the leading standup comedians from India. She is an award-winning environmentalist, and India's first openly gay comedian.
