Achievements

NMU President Les Wong's nomination as secretary of the American Council on Education's executive board was approved by ACE members during a March 8 business session at the council's annual meeting in Phoenix, Ariz. His term ends March 2011. ACE represents presidents and chancellors of all types of U.S. accredited, degree-granting institutions. Since 1918, the organization has provided leadership and a unified voice on key issues. ACE advocates on behalf of higher education in matters of public policy in Washington, D.C., and throughout the nation. It also provides programs, information and a forum for dialogue.

Wong is also on the board of Superior Health Partners, a new health care delivery system formed by Bell Hospital and Marquette General Hospital (MGH). Both hospitals will remain financially independent. The partnership will maximize the resources and management talent of Bell and MGH —and other hospitals that may join in the future—to enhance high quality health care services and medical treatments delivered in the region and proactively prepare for national health care reforms. The goal is to retain more patients who currently travel outside of the Upper Peninsula for care.
