Karen Rybacki (CAPS) was featured in a May 13 Wall Street Journal article titled "Nascar's Roots May Go Way Back." The story highlighted Rybacki's research on stock-car racing and the parallels she discovered between the modern-day sport, fueled by horsepower, and Medieval jousting competitions on horseback. Rybacki said Nascar drivers wear the colors and logos of their sponsors (and their fans follow suit), much like jousting knights once wore the colors and emblems of their overlords. Even the late Nascar hero Dale Earnhardt was called "The Black Knight." Rybacki has presented papers on the topic and wrote about it in the recent anthology, "The Sporting World of the Modern South."
