Carnegie Honors NMU for Community Engagement
Northern has been selected for the 2008 Community Engagement Classification by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. NMU is one of 119 higher education institutions in the nation to earn the distinction. Institutions were classified in one of three categories: curricular engagement, outreach and partnerships or a combination of both areas. NMU received the maximum recognition by qualifying for the latter category. Full Story
Couple Donates Chocolay Golf Course to NMU
Chocolay Golf Club owners Joe and Patsie Gibbs of Interlochen, Mich., have donated the 18-hole course, buildings and equipment to the Northern Michigan University Foundation. The value of the gift is $1.6 million. The couple, whose daughter graduated from NMU, developed the course in 1991 on property they purchased in Chocolay Township. Full Story
Whalen Receives NEH Fellowship
Robert Whalen (English) has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. The fellowship will allow him to work full time during the 2009-10 academic year on “The Digital Temple,” an electronic documentary edition of 17th century devotional poet George Herbert’s English verse. Two Students Awarded Gilman Scholarships
NMU students Jessica Cross of Oxford, Mich., and Nancy Kenok of Homewood, Ill., were awarded Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships for study-abroad programs this semester. They were among 600 students nationwide selected to receive the awards. Full Story
Higher Learning Commission Seeks Public Comment on NMU
NMU is seeking public comment on the quality of the institution and its academic programs in preparation for a comprehensive evaluation by its regional accrediting agency. Accreditation is the stamp of approval from the governing body that reviews all federally funded colleges and universities. NMU is formally re-evaluated every seven years.
Public feedback will be accepted through Feb. 25, 2009, by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Agency representatives will visit NMU March 25-27 to assess the university’s ongoing ability to meet accreditation criteria. Full Story
Superior Dome Turf to be Replaced
After his opening remark that "The timing couldn't be worse," Gavin Leach (Finance and Administration) informed the NMU Board of Trustees at its December meeting that the Superior Dome turf and the mechanism required to roll it out must be replaced. The project is estimated to cost $1.8 million. Full Story
'Beyond Green' Opens at DeVos
The DeVos Art Museum will be the final stop for a touring exhibition titled “Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art.” The show explores how sustainable design philosophy resonates with the work of an emerging generation of international artists from cities including Copenhagen, London, San Juan, Vienna, Brooklyn, Chicago and San Francisco. It will be featured in both galleries Jan. 19 through March 30. Full Story
