Achievements
The Flame, a newsletter
for Northern's UAW Local 1950 (clerical/technical), received two
awards from the UAW Local Union Press Association: first place in
general excellence for newsletters in region 1D with a circulation
under 500; and third place in best overall design in the same division.
Phyllis Zanglein (Communication Disorders) is the
editor of The Flame.
Larry
Pagel (Business) received the North Central Business Education
Association Teacher of the Year Award for outstanding contributions
to business education by a collegiate/university teacher. He was
recognized and presented with a plaque at the NCBEA April 8 convention
in Chicago. Pagel has taught about 30 years at the postsecondary
level. In addition to his teaching duties at NMU, he has supervised
student teachers and advises about 30 business education majors.
Kathy Richards
(Engineering and Planning), Tricia Sheldon (Recreational
Services) and Jim Thams (Engineering and Planning)
were members
of the Lake Superior Leadership Academy graduating class of 2004.
The academy is an annual project coordinated by the Lake Superior
Community Partnership. All aspects of the program are geared toward
educating potential leaders about the inner workings of Marquette
County and developing business networks and leadership skills. As
members of the class of 2004, Richards, Sheldon and Thams attended
one eight-hour session per month from October to May. Sessions highlighted
various aspects of Marquette County, including art and culture,
government, education, the justice system, tourism, media, regional
economy and health and human services. Required elements of the
academy also include an overnight retreat and a full day of team
building and leadership exercises.
