Larry Pagel (Business) received the North Central Business Education Association Teacher of the Year Award for outstanding contributions to business education by a collegiate/university teacher. He was recognized and presented with a plaque at the NCBEA April 8 convention in Chicago. Pagel has taught about 30 years at the postsecondary level. In addition to his teaching duties at NMU, he has supervised student teachers and advises about 30 business education majors.

Kathy Richards (Engineering and Planning), Tricia Sheldon (Recreational Services) and Jim Thams (Engineering and Planning) were members of the Lake Superior Leadership Academy graduating class of 2004. The academy is an annual project coordinated by the Lake Superior Community Partnership. All aspects of the program are geared toward educating potential leaders about the inner workings of Marquette County and developing business networks and leadership skills. As members of the class of 2004, Richards, Sheldon and Thams attended one eight-hour session per month from October to May. Sessions highlighted various aspects of Marquette County, including art and culture, government, education, the justice system, tourism, media, regional economy and health and human services. Required elements of the academy also include an overnight retreat and a full day of team building and leadership exercises.
