English at NMU

The English Department offers a 48-credit master of fine arts degree in creative writing, a 32-credit master of arts degree with a choice of four concentrations (literature, pedagogy, theater or writing) and a 20-credit hour graduate certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), which can ladder into the master of arts degree (pedagogy concentration).

NMU English graduate students benefit from small class sizes, close relationships with their professors and colleagues, opportunities to work on a professional literary journal and university newspaper and in a world-class theater and teaching program.

Program Requirements

Every degree candidate designs a plan of study in consultation with the program director and his or her adviser.

Each English graduate program also has specific requirements, which are listed in the detailed program links below.

Admission Requirements

Regular Admission: Applicants are required to comply with the regular admission requirements of the College of Graduate Studies. In addition, students must have completed a minimum of 30 hours in English courses with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and an overall GPA of 2.75.

Conditional Admission: Applicants who do not meet regular admission criteria may apply for conditional admission, in which case they must complete specific courses prior to conversion to regular admission status. These courses, selected from the list of undergraduate courses acceptable for graduate credit, do not count toward the minimum credits of course work required for the master’s degree or certificate.
