Allison Anderson

Allison Anderson
English

Allison is a junior here at Northern Michigan University pursuing her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She grew up in a small town of Evansville, Wisconsin and graduated from Evansville High School in 2011. This will be Allison’s first year as a TA for the UN100 English block. She is an active member in Superior Edge and Intramural Sports on campus. She is also looking to get involved in the Student Teaching Assistant Organization and the Student Nurses Association this semester. When Allison is not studying, she enjoys going to the beach, hiking, camping, and listening to music with a cup of coffee in hand. Allison is very excited to get started as a TA, and cannot wait to help incoming freshmen get the best experience possible.

Anica will graduate from NMU in December 2013 with a degree in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. She is currently applying to graduate schools to pursue a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. Anica is from Chassell, MI and graduated from Houghton High School in 2010. She is a graduate of the Student Leader Fellowship Program, the treasurer for NSSLHA, and initiated and coordinated an After School Program at Marquette Alternative High School. Anica recently returned from studying abroad in Vienna, Austria. She loves to do any outdoor activities, but enjoys running the most.

Chad is a junior at NMU and is getting his Bachelor’s degree in History with a Minor in Military Science and Engineering Design. He is from Cairo, Egypt and he came here because his father studied at NMU as well. Some of his favorite historical periods are World War II and the Roman Empire. He is the President of the History Club and a member of the All Nations Club since 2010. In his free time he loves to go hiking, camping, snowboarding, swimming, kayaking, and eating a diverse variety of food. His hobbies are soccer and track; in high school he attended the Screaming Eagles invitational to the Olympic Stadium.

Clarissa is a Senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. After graduation, Clarissa hopes to obtain her Master’s degree from Michigan State and eventually work with underprivileged children.  She volunteers her time with the homeless shelter here in Marquette, Room at the Inn. This is her first year being a Teacher’s Assistant and she is very excited! In her non-existent free time, Clarissa enjoys going to the beach, camping, fishing, hunting, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, and spending time with her Toy-Poodle, Bentley. She is also a huge Aaron Rodgers fan!

Courtney is a senior here at NMU and will graduate with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing in May of 2014. She grew up in West Ishpeming and graduated from Westwood High School in 2010. She is a second year TA for the pre-nursing block classes. Courtney is an active member of the Student Nurses Association, holding a community chair with the student affairs committee. After graduation, Courtney is looking to go into critical care and hopes to extend her education after getting some experience.

Jackie is a senior Graphic Design student from Iron Mountain, MI. She transferred to NMU from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities after her freshman year.  Since attending NMU she has been involved in AIGA, Superior Edge, Payne Hall Government, Payne Hall Welcome Crew, Homecoming for Payne Hall (2012 Winner), Women for Women, Relay for Life Team Captain, and now the FYE TA program. In her spare time she likes to coach gymnastics/cheerleading at PEAK Gym Fit.  She has been active in cheering for 8 years. Otherwise you can find her outside (unless it is snowing), at Rice Paddy, or at the Berry/Lakeview Arena watching my friends on the club hockey team play.

Julia is a senior at NMU studying Nursing.  She came to Northern in the fall of 2009 from Dearborn, MI, and has been involved in Superior Edge, SLFP, and held the position of President for the Student Nurses Association.  Julia plans to work as an RN after graduating from NMU, hopefully in the area of pediatrics or emergency/trauma. In her spare time, Julia enjoys triathlon training, doing anything outdoorsy, and engaging in long talks with good people. Some of her favorite things in life include Lake Superior, Superman ice cream, and happy dogs (particularly her fur-kid, Howie).

Her long term goal is to work in a university setting, planning and going on international service projects. She is involved in SLFP, Superior Edge, house government, and other random community service activities. She is spending her summer in Marquette and is very excited to enjoy all of the amazing outdoor activities. In her free time she likes to be crafty, read, and watch the Travel Channel and HGTV. While attending Northern she has volunteered abroad in Belize for spring break, is actively involved in Superior Edge, and she is part of the Student Leadership Fellowship Program. In her free time Kara likes to play wallyball, listen to music, hike up Sugarloaf, have bonfires on the beach, and do anything outdoors. She is so excited to be a part of the First Year Experience Program and she hopes to make a positive impact on her students through their transition from High School to Northern Michigan University.

Katherine is a senior and attended Michigan Technological University for two years before transferring to Northern in the Fall of 2012. She is in love with Northern and all it has to offer. She enjoys challenging herself daily by doing activities such as running, hiking, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, kayaking, and any shenanigans she can get into with friends. She is an avid reader and loves to read the science fiction/fantasy genre. She loves to laugh and have a good time. There are few things she enjoys more than helping others and making someone smile. Katherine is currently serving in the Michigan National Guard as an Interior Electrician in the 1430 Engineer Company here in Marquette MI. Her career goal is to become a dentist and possibly specialize in pediatric dentistry or oral surgery.

Liz Hendricks is a senior at Northern Michigan University and although she has decided to pursue a degree in Sociology, she has a passion for the Sciences. She has been involved with many aspects of campus life including being a note taker for Disability Services, participating in House and Hall Government, and she was previously a Resident Adviser in Spalding Hall. Liz is really excited about the opportunity to be a Teaching Assistant and her goal is to assist others in seeing all the wonderful things that Northern has to offer. In her spare time she enjoys disc golfing, theater, and driving around with her best friend in his 1971 Cutlass Supreme in the summer.

Marina Macias Sevde is a senior studying Mathematics at NMU. She is from Spain and came all the way to the U.S. when she graduated from High School to look for better opportunities. She has been a Spanish tutor at the Language Lab since 2010 and a math tutor for Student Support Services since 2012. She has been a TA for a year and the advice that she gives freshmen students is to meet people through campus activities and student organizations. Through her life on campus she has been involved with Hall and House government, different student organizations, and is currently the president of the All Nations Club.  In her free time she loves mountain biking, swimming, climbing, hiking, and watching documentaries.

Melissa is in her 4th year at NMU as a Psychology/Behavior Analysis major and a Sociology/Human Services double-minor. She will graduate in May 2014 with her Bachelor's Degree and plans to attend graduate school the following fall.  Eventually she would like to become a Behavioral Therapist for children with Autism. She is involved in the Student Psychological Association, Psi Chi, Circle K, and Mortar Board. She also works at the Center for Student Enrichment as a Superior Edge Student Coordinator. After serving as a TA in other programs, Melissa hopes to use what she has learned to positively affect the Freshman in her block. In her free time, she enjoys running, volunteering, and spending time with friends

Michele Kolin is a senior studying Management of Health and Fitness with a minor in Music. She is from Ypsilanti, Michigan, and would like to further her education with the hopes of becoming an Aquatic Director for a campus recreational facility. This is her first year as a teaching assistant. She is currently employed at the PEIF as the Student Aquatic Manager, Building Manager, Student Assistant, and Lifeguard Instructor. She has been involved with NMU varsity swimming, NMU orchestra, On Campus Tutoring, Superior Edge, and Northern Arts Entertainment. In her spare time she enjoys swimming, biking, rock climbing, slack lining, and playing piano.

Mike is majoring in English-Writing and minoring in Outdoor Recreation. Currently, he is employed by both WNMU-FM (NPR) as a board operator and WUPX (Radio X) as the music director. After graduating from NMU he plans on pursuing a career in either publishing or broadcasting. This will be his first year as a Teaching Assistant for a UN100 block. After having a rewarding experience in his freshman block, he's very excited to be a part of the First Year Experience program. When Mike does have free time he enjoys being outside, playing with one of his three bands, or reading.

Peyton is from Traverse City, Michigan. She is going to be a sophomore in the Fall 2013.  Though she is an undeclared major as of right now, she plans on majoring in Community Health Education with minors in Native American Studies and Spanish.  It is her hope to work with reservations in Michigan or elsewhere to assist and develop programs geared toward helping youth find a voice in their community. In being a Teaching Assistant, Peyton hopes to help students find that similar voice in their school and community.

After graduation she hopes to then attend MSU for their veterinary program, and go onto being a large animal vet. When not outside you can either find her knitting, painting, or studying. Shaley Valentine is currently a 2nd year student at NMU and is studying zoology with a minor in chemistry. After NMU, she plans to enter into a Ph.D. program for marine biology to pursue research. Shaley participated in a research project involving the DNA barcoding of fish food under the guidance of Dr. Suzanne Williams through the Freshman Fellows Program. During summer 2013 she participated in a research program at the University of North Florida to study estuarine fish. Shaley is currently a member of the Chemistry Club, Research Coordinator of The Wildlife Society and President of the Rock and Mineral Club. Shaley is also involved with Superior Edge and the Student Leader Fellowship Program.  In her free time, she likes to read, mineral collect and spend a lot of time outdoors. Shaley is extremely excited to be a TA for the FYE Program and cannot wait to make connections with new students.

Amanda is a junior from Sheldon, Wisconsin, pursuing a degree in Secondary Music Education.  Her main instrument is percussion with a mallet emphasis.  She is a member of the NMU “Pride of the North” Marching Band, Symphonic Band, plays trombone in the Pep Band, and participates in numerous ensembles including the Jazz Band, NMU Orchestra, the Marquette City Band, and the Marquette Symphony Orchestra.  When not practicing, Amanda enjoys blogging, exploring Marquette, and hiking with friends.

Brooke is a current senior here at NMU from Maple Grove, Minnesota.  She is studying both Zoology and Spanish.  After graduation, she hopes to pursue graduate school for Marine Biology.  Throughout her time here at NMU, Brooke has found herself to be a very actively involved student.  She currently works on campus in the admissions office as a Campus Visit Program Assistant and is a current cheerleader and student ambassador.  She also is involved in Northern Arts & Entertainment, Superior Edge, Student Leader Fellowship Program, and Northern Spokes.  In the past, she was the president of the Paranormal Research Team for two consecutive years.  Brooke has also interned and worked for Sanibel Sea School in Sanibel, Florida as a Marine Science Instructor and 2013 Summer Camp Coordinator.  In her free time, Brooke enjoys mountain biking, exploring Marquette, rock climbing, swimming, slack lining, scuba diving, and downhill skiing.  This will be Brooke’s third semester as a FYE Teachers assistant.  She is very excited to welcome the new freshman and open the doors to their very own ‘Northern Experience’ of a lifetime.

This is Ellyn's third time being a Teaching Assistant, she also is on the First Year Experience board and is President of the Student Teaching Assistant Organization. This summer she enjoyed in Europe, but now spends her time working as a Service Manager at the Sweet Water Cafe. Besides working you can find Ellyn playing volleyball, running, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing and watching Twins baseball.

She is also the Sports Editor for the student-run newspaper, The North Wind. In addition, she is a member of Superior Edge, and will also be interning with Sports Promotions beginning in the fall. Katie loves the U.P. and all the outdoors have to offer. She loves running, being with friends and family, and absolutely anything to do with the snow!

Linaye Whitehead

Linaye is a senior at Northern Michigan University, pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology Behavior Analysis. She grew up in the small town of Litchfield, Michigan and graduated from Litchfield High School in May
of 2010. She will be applying to graduate schools this fall hoping to get into an either master or doctorates program for clinical psychology.  Linaye wants to further explore the field of addiction. She has participated in many organizations and activities at NMU. She enjoys the outdoors, crafts and gaming. Being this is her first year being a TA she is super excited and can’t wait to get started.

Marissa Brooks

Marissa Brooks
Elementary Education Block

Marissa is currently a senior at NMU, studying Elementary Education with a double minor in integrated sciences and mathematics. She is involved with Superior Edge, SMEA/SCEC, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Relay for Life. While at Northern, Marissa has held a TA position for a MA100 course, but is really excited to work with the FYE program. In her spare time, which happens to not be very often, Marissa likes to hike, read, bake, go camping, four wheeling, go to country concerts, and have fun. Upon graduating, Marissa is looking forward to teaching lower elementary or middle school math, hopefully somewhere down south!

Kristina will be a senior in the fall of 2013. She plans on graduating next May with a BSN degree. She was originally born in Bosnia and lived in Germany for six years before moving to the states with her family when she was seven years old. She currently lives and grew up in Macomb, Michigan. She was also a Resident Advisor for three semesters. After leaving the R.A. position, Kristina decided that she still wanted to continue helping incoming freshman adjust to college life and applied for a TA position. In her spare time she enjoys photography, hiking, exploring the outdoors and spending time with family and friends.

Leann is a senior from Batavia, Illinois. She is currently working on a Psychology degree with a Biology minor. She is also in the Pre-Physician’s Assistant program. She plans to further her education after she graduates Northern and attend PA school. She was a Resident Adviser in Payne Hall for three semesters, and is currently working as a Campus Visit Staff Assistant in the Admissions Office. In her spare time Leann loves adventuring around Marquette, hanging out with her friends, knitting and reading.

Psychology Block

Keara is a Junior attending Northern Michigan University. She is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, with a minor in English; hoping to advance to Graduate School for her PhD. She graduated High School in a small town twenty miles away from Marquette, Gwinn, in 2008. She worked in the Psychology Department this last year by being a TA for the 100 level Psychology labs. She is currently the event coordinator in SPA (Student Psychological Association) and hoping to recruit fresh students with a Psychology interest and/or future this year. She also enjoys volunteering at Marquette General Hospital. When Keara is not attending class or events, she enjoys spending time with her three dogs by hiking, running, and going to the beach. Keara is more than enthused to help incoming freshman start their future with this first year experience program.

Kelsie is a sophomore at Northern Michigan University and is still currently undeclared.  She was born and raised in northern Wisconsin near the shores of Lake Superior and was a graduate of the 2012 class of Ashland High School.  This will be Kelsie’s first year as a teaching assistant for the UN100 Undeclared block.  She enjoys spending time with family and friends, fishing, hunting, running, and playing sports.  This coming school year she wants to get involved with Superior Edge and the Student Teaching Assistant Organization.  Kelsie is looking forward to being a TA for the incoming freshmen and hopes to help them with a great school year!

Kyla Huebner is from Zeeland Michigan. She is attending NMU for a double major in English and German Studies. Kyla is the Media Director of the new Student teaching organization called STAO. She also has been involved with Superior Edge, the Volunteer Center, and was the Vice President of West Hall. This upcoming semester will be her second semester of being a Teaching Assistant. She enjoys running, reading, writing, hiking, and baking. Kyla intends to translate and teach German and poetry after finishing up school.

Justin is a non-traditional student at NMU.  He is currently 30 years old and living in Marquette, MI.  He grew up in Ishpeming, MI and enjoys a variety of activities.  His favorite hobbies are audio recording, volunteering, traveling and playing sports. He has two guard dogs, a Chihuahua and a miniature pincher.   Currently, he is a Junior in the Media Production and New Technology Program with a minor in Theatre and Entertainment Technology.  His goals for the future are to eventually become a Secondary Education Teacher and travel around the world.  Justin believes that, "Teamwork makes the dreamwork, and together we can achieve anything!  Peace!"

Bailey will be a senior this fall pursuing her degree in Environmental Studies & Sustainability with a minor in Spanish. She is from Quincy, a small town in Southern Michigan, and graduated from Quincy High School in 2010. This summer she is interning with NMU's Housing and Residence Life department and during the school year she is a Community Advisor in the Woodland Park Apartments. This is Bailey's first year as a teaching assistant and she is very excited to get started and to meet her block! In her down time Bailey enjoys dancing, jamming to music, reading, going for runs, and eating ice cream. She also recently graduated from the Student Leader Fellowship Program as a Banana Block member. Once Bailey graduates in May, she would like to spend some time in Spain perfecting her Spanish then continue her work with student affairs as a graduate assistant at another university. She hopes to carry on her education by receiving a Master's
degree in Sustainable Design.

Sabrina is going into her 6th year as an NMU student and prays she will finally graduate soon (she will… in May… if all goes to plan). She is an Art Education major with a minor in Secondary Mathematics Education with a love for all arts and crafts. Her favorite mediums to work in are painting, drawing and photography. Spending the last three years as a Resident Adviser in Magers Hall, Sabrina has also found love in being involved and ridiculously busy. Some organizations she has been involved with over the years include the SLFP, Lake Effect Show Choir, the National Art Education Association and being a DJ at Radio X. Lastly, when Sabrina is not doing any of the aforementioned activities, she enjoys biking, swimming, hiking, playing a few nerdy games and dabbling with her guitar and ukulele.

Rafaella is originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil where she lived until she was 17 years old. She then moved to Gwinn, MI to complete her senior year as an exchange student. She graduated from Gwinn High School in 2011 and decided to stay in the Upper Penninsula and persue a degree at NMU. She is a Behavior Analysis Major and a Criminal Justice and Human Resources minor. After graduation she plans on getting her masters in either Chicago or Boston. She has studied abroad in Germany and speaks German, Portuguese and Spanish. She is part of the Superior Edge Program.  During her free time she enjoys hanging out with her friends, going to the gym, and going to the beach whenever it is possible.

Holly is a junior.  She came to NMU to Florida right after high school to be a part of the USOEC weightlifting program.  She is majoring in Communications with a minor in Sociology.  She loves the outdoors and any type of athletics, especially beach volleyball.  She works at Clinique in Younkers.  When she is not training, working, or going to school she likes to volunteer at the UPaws animal shelter.

Maria is a Junior pursuing a Bachelors degree in Management of Health and Fitness. She also plans on obtaining a certification in personal training, intrinsic coaching, and strength and conditioning. Maria is a member of the Superior Edge program, a volunteer at Marquette General Hospital, and a "sister" in the big brothers big sisters program for a local community, and a member of the Health Promotion Society. As a triathlete Maria pushes to seek any opportunity to stay physically active. In her field of passion she hopes to motivate individuals of all ages so stay fit and avoid obesity. When Maria is not studying or incombering other ambitious endeavors she loves exploring the outdoors, listening to music, and spending time with her family.

Hannah is willing to take her degree in education anywhere around the country, but no matter where she ends up she wants to impact children in a positive way.

Amanda, Junior Theatre Major, is a returning TA. She enjoys it because it gives her an opportunity to be a resource to incoming freshman; to help them feel comfortable in, and to acquaint themselves with their new college setting. She has a lot of hobbies outside of school including watching movies and tv shows, reading, stumbleupon.com, crafting, crocheting and knitting. She makes some pretty cool hats.
