Grant Funds WiMAX Generator

NMU recently installed a stand-by generator at one of its WiMAX transmitter sites as a backup during power outages. Because the Marquette fire and police departments also use WiMAX for public safety communications, NMU worked with county administrators to secure nearly $10,000 in emergency services funds from the Department of Homeland Security.

The transmitter’s location on Mt. Menard in south Marquette (pictured) is vulnerable to power outages. There have been two already—one lasting for about 36 hours, according to Eric Smith (Broadcast and AV Services).

“Not all sites need a generator, but in a location like this, it’s quite possible for a tree limb to hit the line and knock out power,” Smith added. “During a storm, the Board of Light and Power may have difficulty getting heavy equipment into this remote location to restore service. There is enough propane in the generator to run for a couple of weeks, if necessary. It gives us a buffer until the BLP can complete the repair process.”

Smith said construction was completed before winter because “once the snow flies, the only way up there is by snowmobile."
