Achievements
Jeffery Gagnon (Upward Bound) is the new president elect of the Michigan Chapter of the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MAEOPP). He will become president of Michigan’s chapter (MI-CAP) at the regional meeting in November and serve a one-year term. MAEOPP is the professional development association of Federal TRiO employees of grant programs in 10 states representing the Midwest region (Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio). Federal TRiO programs include Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math Science, Student Support Services, the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, Educational Opportunity Centers, Veterans Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search. The first four exist at NMU.
Beverly Matherne (English) was one of seven poets featured at "Langages poétiques et poésie francophone en Amérique du Nord" ("Poetic Languages and Francophone Poetry in North America"), an international conference held at York University in Toronto, Canada. At the banquet of the conference, she performed her blues poetry in French, with guitar accompaniment; read from her new book, Lamothe-Cadillac (2009); read poems by Francophone poets from Louisiana; and spoke on a round table, "Poésie francophone et multiculturalisme en Amérique du Nord" ("Francophone Poetry and Multiculturalism in North America").
