Leann Miller (Center for Native American Studies) and Shirley Brozzo (Multicultural Education and Resource Center) co-presented an interactive workshop on teaching strategies and curriculum development for Native American students and/or classrooms at the 7th Annual Native American Literature Symposium (NALS) held March 8-10 in Mt. Pleasant. Brozzo also gave a reading from the fourth chapter of her MFA thesis, Tapestry, at the symposium.
Kia Jane Richmond (English) presented "Writing Process in the English Ed Classroom: Teaching Future Teachers the Power of Peer Response and Portfolios" at the annual Conference on College Composition and Communication, held March 22-24 in New York City.
Ray Ventre (English) and five students from the English department participated in the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honors Convention March 28-April 1 in Pittsburgh, Pa. Ventre moderated and chaired a session on poetry at the conference. Rachel Mills, the graduate assistant for the Writing Center, was awarded third place in the non-fiction narrative division for her essay “Isla.” The other presenters were Kyle Bladow, literary analysis, "Representations of Black Female Sexuality"; Shannon Cole, non-fiction narrative, "Part of the Deal"; Ben Hagen, literary analysis, "Beautifully Balanced: Image and Narrative in Mao II”; and Molly Maier, poetry, “Pocketful of Pebbles."
