Tom
Getman (Chemistry) and
graduate student Kelly Challis made a presentation on Synthesis
and Characterization of 6, 9-Bis- (O-Methylacetimidate) Decaborane
at the 35 th Central Regional Meeting of the American Chemical
Society in Pittsburgh, Pa. Challis’ work is the precursor to polymers
that may have space applications as protective coatings against
atomic oxygen.
Elda
Tate (Music)
performed a recital with bassoonist Robert Danziger at California
State
University
Oct. 22. In addition to works
for flute and bassoon, she performed six new compositions for Native
flute and gave a workshop at the university. On Oct. 30 at the Center
for Learning, Tate premiered a work by Australian composer Phillip
Czaplowski, as well as her own composition, "Zen-ning"
for thumb flute.
Five
NMU students made presentations based on their research at NMU or
during summer internships at other universities at the 14th Annual
Argonne Symposium for Undergraduates in Science, Engineering and
Mathematics. It was held Oct. 24-25 at Argonne National Laboratories
near Chicago – one of the largest facilities run by the U.S. Department
of Energy. The
physics department and physics club sent 10 students to the event.
