Presentations

Don Faust (Mathematics and Computer Science) presented his paper titled “Questions in the foundations of mathematics which are as yet unanswered and the importance of teaching about them” at the 4th East Asia Regional Conference on Mathematics Education in Malaysia. He presented another paper, “Explorationism, Evidence Logic and the question of the non-necessity of all belief systems,” at the 13th International Congress on the Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science in China.

Gary Stark (Business) presented “Feedback seeking by managers” at the 2007 Institute of Behavioral and Applied Management Conference.

NMU students Correy Kowall from Mancelona, Mich., and Brian Krent from Troy, Mich., presented a paper titled “A Stimulation of Evolved Autotrophic Reproduction” at the international Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO) in London. Both are sophomores majoring in computer science. The research for the paper was led by Kowall, whose work was sponsored by a Research Experiences for Undergraduates grant through the National Science Foundation. “GECCO is the pre-eminent conference in the field of evolutionary computation and has fairly low acceptance rates,” said Jeff Horn (Mathematics and Computer Science). "It is unusual for undergraduates to co-author a paper at GECCO and, to the best of my knowledge, unprecedented that undergraduates be the sole authors of a GECCO paper. Correy and Brian have achieved something for the department, as well as for themselves.”
