Biographical Profile

Michael Andary began working as a laborer in the construction industry in 1985, and he started wearing a tool belt as a carpenter’s helper in 1987. He continued working as a carpenter while completing his Bachelor of Science degree in construction management from Ferris State University. Although his education exposed him to several project management opportunities, after graduating in 1993, he opted to enter the workforce as a professional tradesperson and attained journeyman status shortly after his return from school. Within a year, he was appointed a position as a foreman and coordinated work on a variety of projects for a number of contractors, including municipal streets and streetscape structures, elementary schools, medical facilities, state government administrative and maintenance buildings, motels, ice arena foundations and industrial warehouse expansions. He joined Barton Malow Company as a project superintendent and began work on multiple projects that included a higher education science facility and indoor recreation center, a hospital expansion and a K-12 addition/renovation.

Professor Andary began teaching at NMU in 2001, when there were less than 80 declared students in construction majors. In the fall of 2007, the construction curriculum will have more than 180 students. Professor Andary is proud to be a part of such a dedicated faculty and student body, working within a progressive educational system that maintains several articulation agreements with area high schools and has an aggressive outreach program that aids in program growth.

He is an active member of NMU’s Academic Senate and the Academic Service Learning Committee, and he also serves as adviser for the Northern Michigan Constructors, a student organization that provides significant services to the Marquette community by partnering with such groups as Habitat for Humanity, Kiwanis, Marquette Humane Society and the City of Marquette.
