Biographical Profile

Mark Matteson joined the faculty of Northern Michigan University in 2007.  He has been a FAA certified airframe and powerplant mechanic since 1985, and has held an inspection authorization since 1991. 

Before coming to NMU, Professor Matteson was a quality assurance manager at an office that changed names three times due to acquisitions (Short Brothers USA, Bombardier Services America Corporation, L-3 Communications Military Aviation Services), as well as with M7 Aerospace.  He was in charge of quality assurance and safety functions for three U.S. Army National Guard (ARNG) C-23 aircraft maintenance and logistics support contracts.  Professor Matteson also was the program manager for a U.S. Navy Test Pilot School NU-1B/U-6A aircraft technical support contract.  In addition to his quality assurance managerial duties, he provided technical assistance and field support to commercial operators of Bombardier-Shorts aircraft, including start-up airline operations in Canada, Panama and the United States. He also taught factory-approved ground schools for commercial and military operators.

Professor Matteson served as the director of flight maintenance and as an instructor of aviation maintenance training at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, where he taught classes in aircraft inspections and federal aviation regulations. He also oversaw all aspects of maintenance for a fleet of aircraft used in training pilots.

  • Mechanic and inspector at an airline operating turboprop aircraft.
  • Supervisor of an overhaul and repair shop.
  • Technical representative for an aircraft parts supplier.
  • Line mechanic for a flight school.
