MARQUETTE – United States Olympic Education Center weightlifter Breanne Carlson (Peshtigo, Wis.) placed third at the USA Senior National Championships held June 11-13 in Peoria, Ill.
Carlson, a graduate student at Northern Michigan University, was in fifth place after snatching 61 kg and was determined to place higher. She told coach Andy Tysz, “I can do it; I came here to clean-and-jerk.” Determination paid off in the clean-and-jerk with a lift of 78 kg to boost Carlson to third place in the 53 kg division.
“It was very exciting to be competing at a prestigious level and place in the top three,” said Carlson.
Chris Lenahen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Brandon Jackson (Orlando, Fla.) placed seventh in the 94 kg and 105 kg weight classes, respectively. Lenahen snatched 125 kg and clean-and-jerked 161 kg, for a total of 286 kg. Jackson’s total was 277 kg, with 120 kg in the snatch and157kg in the clean-and-jerk.
Andrew Vrabel (Highland, Ind.) snatched 93 kg and lifted 125 kg in the clean-and-jerk, for a total of 218 kg. He finished eighth in the 69 kg division. Dan Gorelik (Moorestown, N.J.) finished 11th competing at 77 kg. After a snatch of 108 kg and a 130 kg clean-and-jerk, his total was 138 kg.
“Everyone reached the goals they set for this tournament and I’m proud of how the team did, especially considering how young they are,” said Tysz.
