MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team (21-9) will face the University of Indianapolis (26-3) in first round action of the 2010 NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Midwest Region. All the games will be played at the SDC Gym on the Michigan Tech campus. Quarterfinals games are Friday, March 12. 
UIndy and NMU have met only one other time. The Wildcats defeated the Greyhounds in the first round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament (91-71).     
The Tournament Field:
(3) Drury vs. (6) Southern Indiana, 12 p.m.
(2) Indianapolis vs. (7) Northern Michigan, 2:30 p.m.
(1) Michigan Tech vs. (8) Northern Kentucky, 6 p.m.
(4) Wisconsin-Parkside vs. (5) Findlay, 8:30 p.m.
Semifinal Games:
Drury/Southern Indiana winner vs. Indianapolis/Northern Michigan winner, 5 p.m.
Michigan Tech/Northern Kentucky winner vs. Wisconsin-Parkside/Findlay winner, 7:30 p.m.
The semifinals are set for Saturday (March 13) with the championship game at 7 p.m. Monday (March 15).
Scouting The Hounds:
UIndy is making its third consecutive appearance and sixth trip in the past eight seasons to the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Region…The Greyhounds lost to Wisconsin-Parkside (66-58) in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Tournament last Saturday…LeAnn Freeland is in her third season directing the UIndy women’s basketball program as she is 72-21 in her career…Samantha Meissel leads UIndy in the scoring column by averaging 19.6 ppg with teammate Jessica Canary next at 14.3 ppg…The same two lead UIndy off the glass as Canary is pulling down a team-high 5.6 rpg with teammate Meissel next at 5.1 rpg…Two Hounds have over 140 assists on the season entering the tournament, Canary leads the team with 148 while Katie Dewey checks in with 144…The duo of Meissel and Canary have 25 blocks each to pace the Hounds…Dewey leads the team with 83 steals…As a team UIndy is averaging 77.5 ppg while yielding 56.4 ppg.
Scouting The ‘Cats:
NMU is in the NCAA post-season for the first time since 2002 when the ‘Cats lost to Northern Kentucky (73-60) in the first round…The ‘Cats are 11-10 all-time in NCAA Tournament play…NMU lost to Michigan Tech in the GLIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship Game (73-69)…Steffani Stoeger and Mariah Dunham were named to the GLIAC All-Tournament Team…Troy Mattson is in his fifth season at NMU and is currently 59-78…Dunham (13.8 ppg) and Stoeger (11.0 ppg) lead the ‘Cats in scoring…Derusha is cleaning the glass with a team-high 178 rebounds (56 offensive) for an average of 5.9 rpg…Stoeger leads the ‘Cats with 83 assists and 40 steals…Angie Leckson has a team-high 24 blocks…During the three-game GLIAC Tournament run, Dunham averaged 24.0 ppg and 7.7 rpg while Stoeger averaged 18.3 ppg…Stoeger recorded six of NMU’s nine three-pointers against Michigan Tech in the GLIAC title game…As a team NMU is averaging 67.1 ppg and giving up 60.6 ppg…During the GLIAC Tournament the ‘Cats averaged 70.3 ppg and yielded 62.3 ppg.
