Frequently Asked Questions

Please remember that this does not replace the ordinances set forth in the Motor Vehicle Ordinance Book. The items listed are only frequently asked questions by students and faculty/staff of this University.

You can register your vehicle on line at: https://nmu.t2hosted.com/cmn/auth_ext.aspx or by logging into my.nmu.edu at: https://mynmu.nmu.edu/ once signed in, follow the links under vehicle registration.  You will be prompted to sign into the Parking Portal using your my.nmu credentials.  Once signed in, click on the PERMITS icon located in the upper left hand side of the screen.  Follow the prompts to register your vehicle.  You have the option to pay with a debit card, credit card or charge your student or employee account.  If you need assistance obtaining a permit please contact Parking Services at (906)227-1476 or by email to parking@nmu.edu. 

You have the first week of school at the start of each semester to register your vehicle. Tickets written for "Failure to Register" after this time period will not be voided. 

All violations are enforce during the first week of each semester with the exception of "Failure to Register". 

You can appeal a parking citation by accessing the Parking Portal or through your my.nmu account.  All citations must be appealed within 10 business days of the date of the ticket.  After 10 days the citation will be billed to your student or employee account and will no longer be appealable. 

Parking permits may be transferred to another vehicle anytime online through your parking portal.  Up to two vehicles may by associated to the permit.  Only one of the vehicles may be parked on campus at a time and that vehicle must have the physical permit properly displayed.

 

You may also utilize one of your 5-free daily permits each semester.  Access these through your parking portal as well, under "Get Permit".

Temporary handicap permits are available with approval from the Disability Services Office.  Please visit their office at 2001 Hedgcock or by calling 906-227-1714 for more information.

You don’t have to have cash in hand to get a parking permit. You have the option of paying for your permit in the following manner:

1. e-check

2. credit/debit card

3. charging your student account

15-minute parking spaces are available in lots 9, 10, and 46.  These time limits are strictly enforced.

After 5:00 p.m. Residents, and University Apartment permit holders can park in either the faculty/staff or commuter parking lots. All vehicles must be moved from these lots by 2:00 a.m.(Exceptions: Lot 9, 15 and 27).

No, it is not free. You must be registered to park in lot 8. A two hour parking limit is in effect for this Students and Faculty/Staff.

Do not park on the grass if a lot is full. Go to the next available parking lot that your parking permit allows you to park in.  Lot 21 is available to all university registered vehicles and is located on the corner of Center and Wilkinson Street. 

If your vehicle becomes disabled, please contact the Police Department at (906)227-1476 or after hours at (906)227-2151. As long as your vehicle is in a legal parking space we will typically grant you 24 hours to get your vehicle fixed and moved to your designated lot.  If you are unable to get your vehicle repaired, you will need to have your vehicle towed.  Disabled vehicles are not permitted to remain on campus. 

If you have a guest on campus, please have them visit the Parking Portal at:  https://nmu.t2hosted.com/cmn/auth_ext.aspx, create a guest account and obtain a permit.  Guests can get a daily pass for any Commuter or Faculty/Staff lot. Overnight parking is available in lots 20, 21 and lot 22.  During the winter semester, please make your guests aware of the plowing schedule and have them move their vehicle to one of the alternate parking lots. 

No.  Guests do not have to register their vehicle to park on campus between noon on Friday - Sunday.  All other parking ordinances still apply during this time.

15-minute parking is available in lots 9, 10, and 46.  Otherwise, special permission for parking is ONLY authorized through the Police Department. The NMU Police Department is the only department on campus that can grant special parking permission. 

If you are graduating in December you must return you permit to the Parking Services Office within 30 days of the last day of class of the fall semester to receive a refund of half the amount paid for the permit. If you are graduating in December and will be student teaching during the winter semester you can get a refund on your parking permit and you can obtain a daily pass through the Parking Portal  for the days you are on campus for conferences.

The PEIF, Dome and Berry Events Center are all part of University property and you must be registered to park in these areas.

The Police Department offers a safe-walk program.  When you return to campus, call the Police Department at (906) 227-2151 and ask for someone from the safe-walk program to meet you at your vehicle and walk back to your residence with you. 

The Police Department Parking Services is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number for Parking Services is (906)227-1476.  The Police Department/Dispatch Center is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and the phone number is (906)227-2151. 

You can register your vehicle on line by logging into: the Parking Portal. Once signed in, follow the links under bicycle registration.

You can remove your bicycle from the registry by logging into:

https://nmu.t2hosted.com/cmn/auth_ext.aspx once signed in, follow the links under bicycle registration and clicking on the remove icon.

Upon arriving on campus, stop at the Police Department. Bring in your weapon and the Dispatcher will assist you in registering and storing your weapon

Weapons can be checked in and out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

To inquire about a lost or found item, please contact the Police Department at  (906)227-2151 or stop at the office located in the Services Building on Sugarloaf Avenue.

If you are registered to receive text alerts, you will be notified with a text message and an email. The NMU website will have information regarding closures and you can call the BRRR line at (906)227-BRRR. Local media will also have closure information.

The Police Department has a limited number of storage spaces available. The storage lot is located behind the Services Building. Please call (906)227-2151 for storage details.
