The Physics Department is housed in West Science, which features standard classrooms, interactive distance learning classrooms, large lecture halls, an auditorium and science-related displays. It also holds the Seaborg NASA (National Aeronautic and Space Agency) Educator Resource Center, which provides materials, workshops and activities for students, educators and community groups. A 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a precision equatorial drive is located in a rooftop observatory. Additionally, more than two dozen state-of-the-art laboratories, equipped with two torsion balances used to measure physical constants, are contained in the building. Further, the Physics Department provides opportunities for NMU students to get involved with outreach efforts that educate area youth about physics. The department has a hovercraft to assist with its outreach efforts.
