The President's Parent Partnership

NMU Parents,

We hope this email finds you and your family healthy and well. We are preparing to close this very unusual semester and academic school year.  Due to the continued concern of spreading the COVID-19 coronavirus, we wanted to share with you the same information about the move-out process that is being sent to NMU residence hall students.

Assuming Michigan has lifted its travel restrictions on May 1, which is currently the date residents of the state will be free to travel, Northern will proceed as follows:

  • Residence hall students still living on campus will be asked to check out by 10 p.m. Sunday, May 3.
  • Residence hall students who need to return to campus to collect belongings can do so between Friday, May 1, and Sunday, May 10.
  • Contracts for students living in on-campus apartments expire on Sunday, May 10 and we ask that residents check out by 10 p.m. of that date.

If however, the Governor extends the “stay at home, stay safe” executive order, Northern will extend contracts and move-out dates for residence hall students. We will notify students of any updates by email.

Regardless of when the move-out period takes place, there will be conditions in place that differ from our usual move-out process. These include:

  • To comply with state directives regarding social distancing, and controlling the volume of people in a given space, we are asking all guests (including family members) to remain in their cars to limit the number of people in our facilities.
  • On-campus residents are asked to have their belongings packed and ready for transport prior to the arrival of family or friends who may be helping to move. Guests or family members are only permitted to enter the facility if assisting with the move of heavy items and no more than two helpers may assist a student at any given time.
  • Everyone entering the facility is required to have facial covering over their nose and mouth with the exception of when they are inside a private residence hall room. Guests must provide their own face masks, and are asked to use the hand sanitizing stations that will be made available near entrances.
  • Any students returning to campus, guests or family members cannot stay overnight in NMU facilities. On-campus dining facilities will not be available during your visit.
  • Prior to leaving, students should stop at their front desk and their mailbox to make sure they do not have any packages or mail remaining.

All of these actions are being taken by Northern to protect our students and employees, as well as your student and your student’s family and friends, from coming in contact with someone who may have the virus even though they may be asymptomatic.  Please help us do everything we can to keep our campus safe from COVID-19.

We’ve also been asked about allowing students who left campus before the end of the semester to keep their belongings in the residence halls until fall. Unfortunately, in order to sanitize and clean our facilities prior to the fall semester, this will not be an option.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this unprecedented semester.

Stay safe,
Jeff Korpi, director
