MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University and USA Weightlifting have announced that Adam Latella has been named head coach of the Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site weightlifting team.

“The U.S. Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan University has a rich history of producing top athletes in our sport,” said USA Weightlifting CEO Phil Andrews. “We look forward to Adam continuing that winning legacy. Everyone here at USA Weightlifting offers their congratulations to Adam in his new role.”

Latella comes to NMU after serving three years as the head coach for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Warhawk weightlifting club, which won the State Championship the last three seasons. Its win in 2016 marked the first time in school history that the team earned a State Championship title. He also spent two years as an assistant with the team.

As an athlete, Latella was a three-time state Olympic weightlifting champion. He also earned NCAA All-American and NCAA Academic All-American status while competing on the Warhawk wrestling team.

While at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Latella also served as an academic adviser.

"Adam's positive attitude is contagious and his plan for preparing student-athletes to be successful on the platform and in life is a perfect fit for our department," said Northern Michigan director of athletics Forrest Karr. "Adam brings well-balanced experience working as an academic advisor while training Olympic-style weightlifters and demonstrated his commitment to student-athlete academic success and competitive excellence throughout the interview process."

USA Weightlifting senior director of sport performance Mike Gattone echoed Karr’s statement.

“Adam brings to the table a strong background in weightlifting coaching and higher education. I know he will do great things at Northern Michigan University and the U.S. Olympic Training Site.”
