Marquette, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site Greco-Roman wrestler Alston Nutter earned a gold medal last night at the United World Wrestling Junior Championships in Las Vegas. The win secured an automatic berth to the finals of the Junior Greco World Team Trials that are set for June 8 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Nutter, of Fennimore, Wis., rolled his way through the 63 kg weight class, winning each match by technical fall and outscoring his opponents 33-0. In the gold-medal match, he faced NMU-OTS teammate Mason Hartshorn of Antioch, Calif. Hartshorn also had a big night, outscoring his opponents 33-7 leading up to the final match before falling to Nutter 0-8.

“Alston had a great tournament to build off of for the World Team Trials,” said NMU-OTS coach Rob Hermann. “His confidence level will be high going into the Trials in June.”

The NMU-OTS team earned a gold, three silver and a bronze medal. In total, the team had 11 athletes finish in the top seven qualifying them to compete at the Junior World Team Trials.

Benji Peak of Elkhorn, Wis., won a silver medal at 60 kg. Going into the finals, he had won three straight matches by technical fall, all in the first period. Peak had a strong start in the gold-medal match, finishing the first period ahead 4-1 before ultimately falling to Malik Johnson 9-11.

The NMU squad’s third silver medal came from Anthony Riopelle of Pittsburgh, Pa. Riopelle competes at 97 kg which was run in the round robin format.

Winning bronze was Riley Briggs of Brentwood, Calif., in the 67 kg weight class. Briggs faced Duncan Nelson of Williams Baptist College, winning 9-0.
