MARQUETTE, Mich. — USA Weightlifting has announced the winners from the 2017 Nike National University Championships in Gainesville, Florida, which took place this past weekend.
The Northern Michigan University Olympic Training Site team came in second in all divisions— men’s, women’s and co-ed. Lindenwood University took top honors in all three categories with East Tennessee State University Olympic Training Site coming in third.
Earning medals for the NMU-OTS women were Taylor Turner of Saint Augustine, Fla., Hope Stockel of Flowery Hope, Ga., and Madasyn Hofstedt of Cannon Falls, Minn.
Turner placed second over-all in the 58 kg weight class with her 187 kg total. On the way to her second-place finish, Turner earned a silver medal and broke a 15-year-old Junior American Record by one kilogram with her 84 kg total in the snatch. She placed first in the clean and jerk with a lift of 103 kg.
Competing in the 63 kg division, Stockel earned three bronze medals for her lifts of 78 kg in the snatch, 100 kg in the clean and jerk and 178 kg total.
Lifting in the 90 kg weight class, Hofstedt received a bronze medal for her 167 kg total. She was also awarded a bronze for her 77 kg lift in the snatch.
Medalists for the men were Kenny Wilkins of Round Rock, Texas, Nate Lewis of Arlington, Wash. and Vincent Andrea of Tinley Park, Ill.
In the 69 kg division, Wilkins won a gold medal for his 115 kg total in the snatch. His 142 kg clean and jerk gave him a silver medal in that lift and enough points for a second-place finish in his weight category.
Lewis earned a silver medal at 105 kg with a 140 kg lift in the snatch. He was also awarded bronze medals for his 167 kg lift in the clean and jerk and over-all total of 307 kg.
Lifting in the 94 kg division, Andrea earned bronze for lifting 135 kg in the snatch. He ended the competition with a 290 kg total.
The event consisted of more than 200 junior and senior-age athletes representing colleges and universities from across the country.
