MARQUETTE – Seventeen members of the United States Olympic Education Center weightlifting team will compete at this weekend’s (Dec. 10-12) American Open in Cincinnati, Ohio.

            The American Open is the weightlifters’ first national competition of the school year. It is used as a secondary qualifier for Junior Worlds and the Pan-Am Championships.  Over 200 competitors, including Olympians and World Team members, will be vying for the top spot.

            “There’s a mix of both upperclassmen and freshmen this year,” said coach Andy Tysz. “We had a very good training cycle and are looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labors.”

            USOEC female weightlifters competing include Northern Michigan University freshman Patricia Park (Rochester Hills, Mich.) at 48 kilograms; graduate student Breanne Carlson (Peshitgo, Wis.) and sophomore Britta Carlson (Peshtigo, Wis.), both at 53 kg; senior Sara Cowles (Daytona Beach, Fla.) at 58 kg; junior Robin Feuerman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) and senior Allie Henry (River Falls, Wis.) at 63 kg and 69 kg, respectively; and freshman Jerilyn “Rael” Smith (Indianapolis, Ind.) at 75+ kg.

            Male weightlifters participating include junior Josh Barnett (Sanford, Fla.) competing at 56 kg; sophomore Michael Evans (Moorestown, N.J.), freshman Tim Scott (Palm Coast, Fla.) and sophomore Andrew Vrabel (Highland, Ind.), all competing at 69 kg; sophomores Matt Fraser (Colchester, Vt.) and Daniel Gorelik (Moorestown, N.J.) at 77 kg; sophomore Chris Lenahen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) at 94 kg; junior Brandon Jackson (Orlando, Fla.) and senior Steve Jarvis (Niagara, Wis.) at 105 kg; and graduate student Collin Ito (Vista, Calif.) at 105+ kg.
