Marquette, Mich.—Athletes from the US Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) and other top U.S. wrestlers are visiting Northern Michigan University for a training camp Dec. 17-21. In total, 20 athletes will attend, five of which are Olympians with three being two-time Olympians.
The WCAP program will bring three Olympians including former NMU student Spenser Mango (2008, 2012). Mango who is a 2010 NMU graduate, is now an assistant coach for the Army program. Other WCAP Olympians are Dremiel Byers (2008, 2012) and Ildar Hafizov. Hafizov competed at the 2008 Games for Uzbekistan.
The WCAP program allows top-ranked athletes to perform at the international level while also serving their nation in the military. Athletes train and compete throughout the year and aim for the Olympic Games.
Other Olympians participating in the camp are Robby Smith (2016) and Ben Provisor (2012, 2016). Both athletes also attended NMU.
Associate Head Coach Andy Bisek, who is also a 2016 Olympian, is looking forward to the week.
“I am very excited to have so many past world team members, medalists and Olympians participate,” said Bisek. “This is set to be a great week of training.”
The NMU-OTS team will next compete Jan. 23-26 in the Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo.
