Presenter: Office of Diversity and Inclusion Staff

Diversity and Inclusion are recognized as assets of the institution, respected attributes of the person and a valuable part of the university experience. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion serves faculty, student organizations and individuals on a multitude of diversity initiatives such as the President’s Committee on Diversity, Gender Working Group, the Diversity Student Alliance, and offers support for teams of students, faculty and staff through mini-grant assistance to encourage collaborative work among members of the university community to work towards becoming a truly diverse institution. Come learn about how to best support your student body and school community with assistance from the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

The Dining Services's Ignite program allows New Students to secure an on campus position with Dining Services, enjoy an early move in, complimentary meals, begin training for your new job and earn money. We cover the lodging and meals for those moving in early, up to 10 days.

Languages enhance any major--learn how they open doors in this workshop.  Learn what languages are available and what level you should take (and how the online placement exam works).  You may be eligible for free Advanced Placement language credits (through NMU)!  Be sure to ask to be placed in a language class even if your block LOOKS full--but you'll need to ask.

Join us each week for a LIVE outdoor tour of campus! Members of the Orientation Staff will take you on a walk outside to show you different academic buildings, residence halls and other campus locations. We are unable to enter campus buildings, but we’ll still have a great time! This tour will be offered during all five workshop time periods.

Feel free to Zoom in for a short presentation by Jim Cantrill, Department Head of Communication & Media Studies (CAMS) and Director of NMU's General Education Program, to learn about communication-related majors and opportunities for other students at Northern. Topics include the nature of CAMS, our use of technology to develop skill for the 21st Century, international studies, and internship opportunities. Time will be available to ask questions about departmental programs and General Education at NMU.

This will be an exciting introduction to all of the amazing opportunities within the NMU Theatre and Dance Department.  We will cover how to audition for on-stage roles, get involved working behind the scenes, and how to get a job in one of our shops.  This interactive discussion will cover all the questions new students usually have but we can't wait for your unique questions as well.
