Winter Orientation Overview

Winter Orientation is a two-day event, designed for First Year Students, Transfer Students, and parents/guests.

Day one consists of check-in and other preparation activities.  Students will start by checking-in, picking up their laptops and taking photos for their ID cards.  Later that day students will take any appropriate placement tests to help them prepare for course selection the next day. (For more information on placement test please visit:

Day two is a very full day! Students will spend the first half of the day learning about academics and preparing for course advising.  During the second half of the day, students will hear from different areas of the university including Student Activities, the NMU Police Department, Dining, and Housing and Residence Life.

Parents and guests will hear from the Dean of Students and the Director of the Academic and Career Advisement Center, providing information about Northern from a parent’s perspective. Some sessions will be strictly for parents and others will be combined with the student groups.

Living on Campus? You have the option to move in early if you contact Housing and Residence Life: Early move-in is available for Tuesday and Wednesday, if you contact Housing and Residence Life ahead of time. Email housing at with your name, Identification Number and the date you want to move-in. There is a fee of roughly $30 per night, but you must contact Housing and Residence Life first. Unfortunately, on-campus accommodations are NOT available for parents and guests. Our goal is for students and parents/guests to leave orientation feeling confident in what Northern Michigan University has to offer. By the end of Orientation, students will have begun the process of learning Northern’s campus, policies, and have the tools and skills necessary to carry them to graduation!
