The members of NMU student organizations sponsor almost 300 campus-wide programs and events every year in addition to the hundreds of group activities. These same students volunteer thousands of hours of service annually to local communities. In the process, the student organizations that register at Northern Michigan University every year provide thousands of students with fun, friendships, memories, and educational experiences that cannot be found in the classroom.
Efforts put forth by student organizations are recognized annually at the Leadership Recognition Banquet.

Student Organization: Modern Medievalists
|Description||The Modern Medievalists is a student group associated with the Shire of Skerjastrond, and a division of the Society for Creative Anachronism, or the SCA. SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th century Europe. Our "known world" consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, art exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. Our "royalty" hold courts at which they recognize and honor members for their contributions to the group. The Shire of Skerjastrond is a member of the kingdom of Northshield, which encompasses Michigan's U.P., Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota and parts of Canada.
