Message from Director Winter 2008

Message from Director

Can you believe we are so far along in the semester already? Thunders will be rolling in soon I’m sure.

Are you staying in Marquette this summer? Consider taking a summer course in Native American Studies. NAS 340 - Kinomaage: Earth Shows us the Way will be offered as well as NAS 101 Anishinaabe Language, Culture and Community and NAS 204 Native American Experience.

Dr. Adriana Greci Green and I took students to lower Michigan as part of a successful trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts & the Ziibiwing Cultural Center in conjunction with Dr. Greci Green’s special topics course NAS 295 – Issues of Representation of Native Americans.

Dr. Joe Lubig, Mr. Kenn Pitawanakwat and I traveled with nine students to Sugar Island over spring break.

The 16th annual Pow wow was a nice success with dancing and singing at the Vandament Arena and the feast at the Jacobetti Complex.

Finally, as the semester winds down, we still have events planned to keep things interested. The Indigenous Earth Day Summit is taking place in April (4/22 & 23) with an Aboriginal delegation from Australia.

Always keep an eye on our Web site. We have a lot of resources including information on internships and scholarship opportunities, news about conferences and cultural events, and even language lessons.

If you have news you would like to share, please e-mail us. We can’t promise that we’ll post your information, but we’ll do our best.

Enjoy spring as we know it in the U.P.!
