2014 Graduating Senior

Parks_RJE_April141.jpgThe Music Department is proud to designate Sara C. Parks as its Outstanding Graduating Senior for 2014.  A graduate of Superior Central High School, Sara has compiled a very strong academic and performance record at NMU while demonstrating great personal discipline and dedication to her family. Transferring to NMU in 2007, Sara delayed her academic work to permit her husband Jason to complete his social work degree in 2010.  She then resumed her music education studies begun at CMU while continuing to manage the lives of their two energetic children, Delaney and Shane.

Sara was a vital part of the entire choral and vocal program, including dozens of performances and numerous solos with the University Choir, Madrigal Singers, and Marquette Choral Society.  In popular and jazz idioms she organized and ran The NMU Wildcats, a student-led jazz vocal group, and was frequent soloist with the NMU jazz band, including performances at the yearly Jazz Festivals.  On stage, she performed in many Opera Theatre Workshop productions and culminated her theatrical experience with the role of Cosette in last fall’s FRT production of Les Miserables (in which her daughter Delaney also appeared).

Sara_Parks2.jpgIt is a testimony to Sara’s self-discipline and musicianship that she prepared an extremely challenging senior vocal recital during the rehearsals for Les Mis and presented the recital only a short time after the run of the musical concluded. Sara’s current student-teaching work is further developing her wonderful passion for music education; her wide range of musical skills and love for teaching are going to inspire and change the lives of countless young people.

The faculty is looking forward to watching her successful teaching career. Congratulations to Sara and her entire family for this accomplishment.
