Experience the Finest in Musical Learning!

At NMU, all performing ensembles and studio lessons are open, by audition, to any student, regardless of major.  There are no added lab fees for these courses.  If you are taking lessons or enrolled in an ensemble, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art practice rooms and other rehearsal facilities in the Thomas Fine Arts building.  You will study and rehearse with a nationally recognized music faculty whose enthusiasm and dedication will help you reach your full potential. You will also get to perform in one of the premiere concert venues in the Midwest, the fabulous Reynolds Recital Hall. Make sure to schedule a tour of the Music department when you arrange your campus visit!

NMU Department of Music graduates get great jobs!  Nationally, there is consistently a strong call for qualified public school music teachers, one of the most rewarding careers imaginable. Our graduates regularly move on into music graduate study programs at prestigious institutions. Others find careers as U.S. military musicians, professional performers, in composition, in various aspects of the music industry, and in many other careers.


The Music department hosts dozens of concerts and recitals each year at the Reynolds Recital Hall and other venues.  Featuring NMU students, faculty, and visiting artists, these exciting events are free and open to the public. What can YOU do with Music at NMU?

At NMU your opportunities to get involved in music-making are boundless. All performing ensembles are open to qualified students regardless of major. March with the “Pride of the North”, the Wildcat Marching Band, perform with the Symphonic Band or University Orchestra, or swing with the NMU Jazz Band. There are plenty of exciting choral and vocal activities as well. Traditional choral groups include the University Choir, the Marquette Choral Society, and the Arts Chorale, a select mixed ensemble. Popular and contemporary music is sung by Northern Lights, a student-led a cappella group. Got the Theatre itch? Audition for opera productions and musicals; auditions are open to all NMU students. Sign up for private instrumental or voice lessons with full-time faculty, even if you’re not a music major. Attend fabulous concerts and recitals without charge in the Reynolds Recital Hall, one of the finest performing venues in the Midwest. If you choose to major in Music Education, you’ll be pursuing the most rewarding profession imaginable, and the department’s small student to faculty ratio means that you’ll have the personal attention and support of the most experienced and dedicated faculty anywhere.
