LGBTQ+ at NMU

The Student Equity and Engagement Center (SEEC) provides services and a safe space for LGBTQ+ students to gather, find community, and access resources.

Queers & Allies is NMU's student-led LGBTQ+ organization! Founded in 2009, Q&A has a large presence across campus. The student leaders and members are responsible for running NMU's annual Drag Show, hosting educational panels, holding weekly meetings @ 8:30 pm in Jamrich Hall, and more! Each semester, the Student Equity & Engagement Center invites you to celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ+ graduating students with their allies, family, and friends!

Lavender Graduation is a time to recognize and honor the accomplishments of graduating LGBTQ+ students. During the ceremony, the LGBTQ+ graduates are given lavender-colored cords to wear for commencement.

*Graduates must reserve a cord and sign up to participate here: https://forms.gle/hWoFQ9TnXBDunczb9

Lavender cords are used due to the historical significance of the color to the LGBT+ community. The color represents empowerment, strength, pride, and community. The cords honor your history and your future as you step into life as a Northern alum.

We acknowledge that not all students may openly wear their cords. If it is required, we empower you to utilize the alternate use of lavender cords: The lavender cord signifies a special honor for students who have exemplified a quiet determination as they have achieved their scholarly goals.
