Zach Ziegler of Mayville, Wis., will be the student speaker at Northern Michigan University’s winter 2008 commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13. He will receive a bachelor’s degree in secondary education music.

Ziegler said his speech will focus on stories and how the time spent between studies is what makes each student’s experience unique and builds character. Ziegler participated in several extracurricular activities at NMU: marching band, Friends of Jazz, Radio X, the Michigan Educators National Conference, Friends of Jazz, Honors Student Organization, Freshman Fellowship, the Native American Student Association, the campus visit program, house government in his residence hall, and intramurals in football, volleyball, kickball, soccer, ultimate Frisbee and water polo.

When asked to share his reflections of NMU, Ziegler said, “I’m convinced that Northern was the perfect place for me to go to college and figure out more about myself. I’ve been student teaching back in Wisconsin this semester and I have missed Marquette and NMU’s campus like crazy. Some of it is the wonderful people I met on a daily basis. Some of it is being minutes from Lake Superior and mountains. I have no regrets and I wouldn’t trade these past four years for anything in the world. It was a great experience.”

Commencement will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the NMU Superior Dome.
