Northern Michigan University’s 2008 Homecoming celebration is scheduled Sept. 27 through Oct. 4. It will revolve around the theme, “Oh Snap, the ‘90s are Back,” in honor of new freshmen who were born predominantly in that decade.

This year’s activities include traditional student favorites such as the Dead River Games and king-and-queen competition, along with several events of interest to NMU alumni and community members.

The Sonderegger Symposium, a day-long series of presentations on Upper Peninsula-related topics, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, in Mead Auditorium. The political science department will convene three expert panelists for “Great Lakes Symposium: Politics and Policy of Protecting the Lakes” from 3-5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in Reynolds Recital Hall. The annual Homecoming parade on Third Street will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Other Friday-night events include receptions for the Colleges of Business, Arts and Sciences and Professional Studies at 6:30 p.m. at the Landmark Inn. The NMU Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for the same time in the Great Lakes Rooms. Advance tickets are required and may be purchased at all EZ Ticket outlets. A 7 p.m. open house will be held at the renovated Donckers downtown and an all-alumni reception will close out the evening at 9 p.m. at UpFront and Co.

A historical walking tour of campus, presented by NMU historian Russ Magnaghi, will kick off Saturday’s festivities. The tour runs from 8:30-10 a.m., beginning in the Peter White Lounge of the University Center. It will be followed by the Alumni Association Awards and Foundation Scholarship Brunch at 10:30 a.m. in the Great Lakes Room (advance registration required) and a theater alumni reception at noon in the Black Box Theatre in the McClintock Building.

The Alumni Association/Wildcat Club Tailgate Party will be held at 2 p.m. outside the Superior Dome in advance of the NMU-Saginaw Valley State University football game at 4 p.m. A fifth-quarter reception will be held after the game at the Holiday Inn.
