Study Abroad in Oldenburg

A wonderful partnership between Northern and the University of Oldenburg (Carl von Ossietzky University) was initiated in 2008. NMU selected Oldenburg as its partner university because of Oldenburg's excellent outreach to students coming in from abroad. Of note is its integration of such students into regular university courses (i.e., not courses designed solely for foreign students) and its "buddy program." Best of all, the transition to and from Oldenburg is financially seamless: students pay exactly what they pay to attend Northern, including financial aid.

Stammtisch (German conversation table)

Stammtisch is a great way for students, the wider Marquette community of German speakers and learners to come together. We engage in conversation, laughter, and games in a relaxed atmosphere. Alumni responding to a question about their most memorable experiences at Northern consistently remark, "Stammtisch!"

German Film Series

Every semester the German Club sponsors a bi-weekly series of German movies.

German Club

The German Club generally holds its meetings immediately following Stammtisch. Club events have included trips to the famous Weihnachtsmarkt in Chicago, to the Fasching celebration in Johnsonville, WI and various on-campus activities such as "German Jeopardy." The German Club is also key to the success of the annual Nikolausfeier in December.

Summer Study Trip to Vienna

This four-week faculty-led study abroad opportunity takes place from mid-May to mid-June. Students earn 8 credits: 4 in a German class at Cultura Wien, and international language institute; and 4 in Central European Culture and Civilization (GR/HS 311, fulfills the upper division liberal studies humanities requirement). For three consecutive years, Vienna has been named the "most livable city in the world." This is an absolutely amazing and affordable program.
