About Alpha Psi Omega
Alpha Psi Omega is the national theatre honors society dedicated to encouraging dramatic production at every step in a person’s academic career. Alpha Eta Xi is the APO chapter at Northern Michigan University. In addition to participating in the various productions and activities offered by the Theatre and Dance Department, members have the opportunity to represent APO and work outside of the university. Whether they are in the audience cheering on other members performing onstage or working alongside each other backstage, students involved in Alpha Psi Omega support one another. Relationships fostered in APO become strong bonds and are friendships that can last a lifetime.

We are a group of people who love theatre, but you don’t need to be a theatre/dance major or minor to join! Many of our members have majored in biochemistry, physics, languages, education, zoology, media production and more. This makes us a very diverse organization. Additionally, APO is a great way to start, or continue to participate in the NMU Theatre and Dance Department and to meet new people!

APO Social Events
One of the best parts about being a part of Alpha Psi Omega is making friends and connecting with fellow performers and technicians. APO hosts a variety of social events each year, including a variety of unique workshops, a holiday party, game nights, escape rooms, and much more!
APO On-Campus Involvement
As a registered NMU student organization, APO actively participates in many on-campus activities. In addition to being a huge part of NMU's Theatre and Dance Department, APO participates in Fall Fest/Orientation, Homecoming, Make a Difference Day, and many more on-campus events throughout the year. Starting in the fall of 2023 APO hosts the annual Upper Peninsula Day of Theatre! They are also the proud 2016 champions of the Homecoming Relay Race at Dead River Games!
Productions
In addition to many of our members being involved in productions through the Theatre and Dance Department, APO has put on some of its own theatrical productions. These productions were entirely student produced, directed, and designed. Some of our past productions include:
- Twelfth Night
- Heroes and Villains Cabaret
- The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon
- Worth a Second Glance Cabaret
- The Bold, the Young, and the Murdered
Joining Alpha Psi Omega
Inducted members of Alpha Psi Omega are chosen based on a range of criteria, including:
- Involvement in theatre and dance at Northern Michigan University
- Participation in Alpha Psi Omega events
- Attendance of meetings
Inductions will require:
- 12 memorized lines of Shakespeare
- Memorizing the Greek Alphabet
- Being able to answer two questions about APO (will be provided with questions beforehand)
- A one-time induction fee of $30
**You do not need to be inducted to participate in APO Events
Inducted Membership
Your involvement in theatre is crucial when it comes to being an inducted member -- in order to become an eligible inductee, you must earn 45 "theatre participation" points. Though that number may seem daunting, it's extremely easy to earn points; you can earn them for being in virtually any theatrical role, both on and offstage! By being inducted you will get the chance to run for an executive board position as well as plan and lead the many events that APO hosts each year!
Meetings
Meetings are typically bi-weekly and are held every other Sunday starting the first week of first semester. Topics that are discussed include planning for upcoming events, induction preparation, fundraising, and many more.
